I just had a thought (imagine that).

I was thinking that one reason for the split may be becasue WB was trying to force Van Halen to do the gig with Roth, something we all know Eddie has been against. So WB wanted all or nothing, Eddie wouldn't go for that, and they split from eachother. Eddie finds a new record label (Atlantic hopefully) and is free to do whatever he wants (speculation).

Who's knows, just throwing it out there for discussion.

But why can't they keep their fans informed?

why does a label change make any difference? would you not buy a VH recording if it was released under someone other than Warners? it's interesting, yeah, but in the grand scheme of things, who gives a fuck? it's not like there's an impending release that is being held up because of this. while some of us disagree to whether the split was "newsworthy," it's not very significant to the general CD buying public. you're still going to buy a VH CD at your local store, it's just being shipped there in someone else's box. big deal.

TT, I think the key is the two seemingly unrelated bits of news we got in the same day.

1. Van Halen & WB are friends no more.
2. Van Halen fired their lawyer.

Now tell me something, why on earth would you fire your lawyer in a non-amicable manner if you didn't have some kind of a beef with them? That tells me there are only a few real options.

1. Van Halen wanted to move to a new record label to avoid paying Ray Danniels any more money. Since Eddie has never been to blame for any situation in the band ( ), someone has to be the scapegoat for letting such a silly contract through. Kill the lawyer!

2. Van Halen wanted to work with Roth again but the band's lawyer and Roth's lawyer played hardball and couldn't work it out. Maybe the point of contention was over the WB label. VH splits from the label and removes the lawyer obstacle from the mix.

3. These events are truly unrelated. WB just cut VH to cut costs and VH was planning on letting their lawyer go anyway.

Whatever the reason is, the fact EVHInc re-registered Van Halen tells me that, at least in his mind, he plans on the band moving forward and continuing. Why else would you need ownership of something if you had planned on retiring it?

you keep the ownership interest in the name forever, in case some unscrupulous businessman tries to market dumb shit like VH condoms or VH tampons. seriously, if someone's gonna put your name on something, you want control of it, right? that's what Ed is doing, protecting his name and ensuring he can take legal action against unauthorized use.

Although "keep" the ownership isn't the case here.

Whatever terms WB and the band came to in the end, the transfer of ownership of the name "Van Halen" was part of the deal. Eddie did NOT have ownership of the name until last month. Like Prince, they signed it away in 1977. The current AOLTimeCNNWarnerEMINetscape execs probably have no interest in whatever games their predecessors played in the 70's with artist's names. Which is probably why Prince was finally able to settle his legal troubles last year.

as early as 1990, the name "Prince" was a registered trademark of PRN Music Corportation, according to the fine print on that year's release (the horrible Graffiti Bridge disc), so it wouldn't have anything to do with him getting out of his problems last year. it was more or less WB had the rights to music released under the name of "Prince," so the dopey symbol was adopted, giving him a little leeway to make side deals with other entities. his argument was more along the lines of him wanting to release a disc every year, or more frequently, while Warners wanted to milk one disc for as many singles as they could. further down the road ownership of master recordings became the issue. i think Warners finally got tired of Prince's bullshit, and figured just let him go and be done with it. they got to release one more package of new stuff, and then last summer they did another greatest hits package, with no new material. Prince pretty much made himself a nuisance to Warners, and they put up with it for almost ten years.

Truly the band has no heart and soul and that's why they don't care.
