I don't know if this has been discussed in the press years ago, but I must say I think the DLR solo tune "Good Times" is a direct reference to his tenure in Van Halen and the possibility of things to come, even though it was written in '87.

Someone asked Dave that question during an interview. He said that it was about a different set of friends.
I always wondered why it wasn't on his "Best" CD. It's a great song.

This has been discussed here before.

Regardless of what he said in the interview, it is about his days in Van Halen.

And yes, it is an awesome song, one of his very best, if not the best.

We agree on the song. That's cool.
How do you know for sure it is about VH? I thought it was until I heard Dave say that it wasn't.

I think it is about VH, and I think DLR lied when he said it wasn't, but of course I could be completely wrong.... Great Song!!!

Until I read this post I hadn't listened to that song in a long long time. I hadn't previously made the VH connection but now it seems patently obvious. Kind of makes me sad in a way--I listen to that song and look at a picture of VH when they were young and realize it won't ever be the same again. Great song.
"With me in the band, it's one of those miraculous 97-97 deals. It's 97 percent you and 97 percent moi. Is it Mick or Keith? I don't know" -DLR

"We eventually started playing clubs, and we also did weddings. We played everything from the Ohio Players to K.C. & the Sunshine Band. You would love the sight of Van Halen doing 'Get Down Tonight'! But by the third set when everybody was good and tanked up--boy, we'd be blazin'!" -Michael Anthony

diamondsgirl:

I hear the lyrics to that song and can't imagine that it is anything but Dave singing about his days in Van Halen.

The part where he sings "Hey look at this picture, can you believe that was you. . .and who's that standing in the corner, not me!!", I always thought that was Dave referring to Valerie standing in the corner. I really think that Dave saw Valerie as a competitor who took Ed's total attention away from the band.

In my version of a perfect world, if Dave got back with Van Halen, this is the song that Dave would sing in his solo part of the show, maybe with Ed playing the guitar in the shadows, or even sitting on a stool next to Dave. How cool would that be??

Of course in my dream VH tour, the show would start off with Romeo Delight and include Secrets and Hear About It Later, plus Ed would jam an extended intro to Women In Love.

The possibilities with Dave back in the band would be endless!

I loved that song. With Vai playing the clean 12-string.
