Disclaimer: I'm not trying to use this thread for shock value. This is a valid question in my mind.

I don't really understand why guys are such big fans of Dave. I found him amusing and enjoyed his "tongue in cheek" humor. He was a decent singer who really carried it through with attitude.
I never got his Chippendale stripper routine. Actually, I sometimes found it downright embarrassing. I don't care to see his "package" or him in assless chaps. Never cared for the whole bump & grind routine. I always felt it was for the fems in the audience.

So what do you rabid Daveheads find so "brilliant" about him?

I don't pay attention to the chaps or anything like that - majority of my time spent "with" Dave involves listening to the songs he recorded - I like the way he sounds and I like the way he writes. Could give a sh*t whether or not he was wearing nothing but fuzzy bunny slippers at the time.

I like DLR. I respect his accomplishments. At the same time, I understand that none of those accomplishments reflect upon me or on who I am. People who worship DLR (or any other rock star) don't see it that way. They seem their fandom as a statement about who they are, and what they wish they were. Out of that comes a feeling of being personally criticized when their hero is criticized.

Mike's got it all figured out. He's better than us because he doesn't take things said against his rock heroes personally.

Y'know Mike, that's probably one of the most concise and to-the-point things I have read on these boards in a long time. Kinda sad, really.

i don't understand why people are slamming Dave for doing what he's always done, when elsewhere on this site, people are praising bands like Foreigner and the Eagles for doing practically the same thing. hell, most of their songs are older than Dave's VH material...i think Dave becomes an easy target because of the numerous splits with the VH boys, the lawsuits (which are probably bullshit anyways), the dope bust, the new DVD..."miscues" to some, but Dave keeps rollin'...

i admire Dave because he keeps doing what he believes in, and doesn't care who likes it. i don't get embarrassed by what he wears;it's not my bare ass hangin' out of those chaps. unfortunately, kids raised on MTV are going to focus on the visual as well as the music, maybe more on the visual than the music...so the first word out of most mouths has something to do with Dave's hair or clothes. i'm not there for that. the tunes move me...

Some eighteen years or so ago, Vanity Fair listed what they thought were the top metal acts of the time. They liked Judas Priest, though they thought the tough-boy act got a little heavy at times (talk about 20/20 hindsight).

    Liked AC/DC, too.

I remember specifically what they had to say about the then-current Classic Van Halen. They called Van Halen a rare paragon of taste and humor in a tasteless, humorless genre. For my purposes, that may be the best summation I've ever seen.

Classic Van Halen was witty and a laugh riot. Roth's cartoonish, over-the-top, and very DELIBERATE caricature of a rock star had a great deal to do with that. The whole band was funnier and more in-your-face back then, whether thay acted in concert with or as an eye-rolling foil to Dave's antics. And there's been nothing like that Classic Van Halen attitude since.

So I'll forgive Roth the complications his age has insinuated into the line between rock star caricature and self-parody. At least he's out there tryin' to work that distinction out.

Probably not very responsive to the original question, I'll bet. But let's not delude ourselves in any attempt to deny that proponents of the other Van Halen eras take their preferences just as personally. Let's also not forget the anti-Dave faction - from the look of things, easily as rabid and unreasoning as they're wont to allege Dave fans of being; in fact, the more vocal they are, the more reflective of their own bitter criticisms they reliably render themselves.

And lately, we've been running out of excuses for the Dave-heads to be getting all the press...

I just don't get why men are so rabid in the defense of Dave. (I hate to say it but the guy seems to be begging for critisism.)

Is it because the perception that he is screwing a new model nightly and living vicariously through him?

My take is Dave is all show buisness. If he's not married he probably has a steady. One thought I have had is it would be the ultimate gag if he was actually gay. (I'm pretty sure he's not) That would make the parachuting into Anaheim Stadium or driving across the country for the MTV awards look like small potatos!

    Hmm. Interesting questions, ETR.

Can't really speak to the motivations of other Dave fans. It would honestly crack me up if Dave were indeed gay.

But it wouldn't change the fact that Classic Van Halen was objectively superior in many ways - not only to its own subsequent versions, but to any of its contemporaries. It certainly wouldn't change the fact that Classic Van Halen was indisputably the definitive era for this band.

So that's why this CVH fan likes to pipe in occasionally.
