.... I'd be very surprised if this new guitar player is just a stand-in Eddie VH clone - no dis-respect to Bart Walsh, the guy plays VH like the records - but I don't wanna see my hero reduced to a novelty act for another tour.

Anyways, the '99 and '01 tours were basically fun tours for DLR - he wasn't promoting new material - the '99 tour was NOT in support of DLR Band - that cd's tour was cancelled when J. Lowery bailed. This time Dave will be promoting a cd and accompanying DVD (it looks like anyway???).

I think with those tours, he thought - 'I haven't sung some of those classics in years - and with Eddie looking for a singer...."

This new guitarist could be a great boost to DLR's career - I know, he needs decent label support - but who know's? - maybe somethings lined up.

I'm thinking (and hoping) that Bart Walsh was 'encouraged' to start something new.

Well I would enjoy a 50% DLR solo, and 50% VH show from ROTH, with the show being about 2 hours, now that would be very kool!!!!!!

I want to see Dave do a setlist that is comprised of 80% solo material, with the odd Van Halen tune thrown in. And I want the Van Halen tunes to be obscure ones, not Jump or Panama or Hot For Teacher etc. Another thing is I'd like these songs to be mixed up somewhat, you don't have to play the same setlist night after night.

For VH tunes, I'd like to hear Women In Love, Bottoms Up!!, Fools, or Secrets. Those great songs that are less well know, but that I think Dave could still kick the shit out of.

As for solo work, there's a ton that I'd prefer to hear before hearing Dave and his band play the VH material over and over. A list of DLR solo tunes I'd love to hear live would be

Experience
Black Sand
Perfect Timing
Two Fools A Minute
Ladies Night In Buffalo
Big Trouble
Lady Luck
Tell the Truth
The Dogtown Shuffle (One of Dave's finest EVER)
Night Life
She's My Machine
Right Tool For the Job
Coconut Grove (the GEM of CFTH)

I really think these are songs that suit Dave's style the best right now. His trouble zone is when he gets into the faster paced stuff like Light Up the Sky, Romeo Delight or Little Guitars.

This is a good topic, I'm going to send it to the Opinions/Speculation forum. Keep it going.

you know, I bet you're exactly right. With this new guitarist, I bet Dave will play some of his older stuff - and hopefully a bunch of new tunes.

I'm getting more and more excited about seeing Dave on tour

I agree with Glenn for the most part. I might have a few different songs on my set list but the sentiments the same. The only part I don't think you'll see is a varied set list - and it shouldn't really matter as I don't think there'll be any multiple night stands at any one venue. Let's face it, the setlist is not designed for the fanatic that loads up their VW microbus with dope and hits the road on DLR's tail - it's meant for the fans that are probably only gonna see him one time and it's meant to give the same experience to the fans in each location.
But if he does do a show focusing on his solo material, I hope he books a stop here in Orlando (or hell, even Tampa) at a real venue (amphitheatre or arena - no clubs, please)!

So by your maths, DLR sings 100 songs every gig!!!!!!

Good call on 'The Dogtown Shuffle' Glenn - probably the best song on ALAE.

Bart was great at replicating Eddie's riffs and licks, but even Ed mixes it up quite a bit live, adding stuff here and there, not on the record.
This new guy with Dave would make alot of the older VH stuff fun to listen to if he gave it a fresh look and mixed it up some, while staying true to original arrangement. Play his own solos, and you have a situation where fans don't know what to expect, probably like it was when Vai toured with Dave early on his solo tours.

At this point, anything new from either side would be a breath of fresh air for the fans. Dave may have an ace up his sleeve if his DVD winds up being as over the top and out of control as it has been rumored. He should be able to push it just like the DLRBand cd and have no problem getting his cool mill back, if it winds up being groundbreaking or beyond cutting edge.

Alright, I'll meet you all somewhere around 60/40 split.

60% old, classic VH that we rarely hear and 40% DLR solo that we've never heard!

VH setlist: I'm The One, DOA, Beautiful Girls, GGB, Cradle, SGMAD (Dave style), Atomic Punk, Little Guitars, Sinner's Swing, Hear About It Later, MS & Unchained. Maybe surprise us ALL with a little Me Wise Magic (prove it wasn't any fluke he sang it)!

DLR setlist: Goin' Crazy, Elephant Gun, Yankee Rose, Knucklebones, Bottom Line, Two Fools A Minute, Hot Dog, ALAE, Hammerhead Shark, Showtime, Sensible Shoes.

Dave shows us he can do this kinda rejuvination and I'm there!!

Aw hell...I'd be there anyway!

You know, I would like to see Dave tour on a setlist that strongly highlights his solo career, but I'm just not seeing it happen. Roth's no fool - he knows his fanbase includes two groups: diehard Roth-philes and nostalgic Van Halen fans. Sure, playing solo stuff will please the former, but since the latter is much larger, not focusing on VH material cuts apart his audience.

The problem is he has LET his solo material become unknown. He's going to pay for it bigtime too, since people will only go to so many VH cover band concerts before they get tired of it.
