Some people here have been saying that Sammy was lazy during his days with Van Halen, but remember something that caused that.

When Sammy joined the band, he was still under contract with Geffen records and still owed them one more solo album.

He did that album, "I Never Said Goodbye", in 1987, with Eddie playing bass, I think. So there was some time wasted to make that album.

    Just a thought.

I think a lot of those "Sam is lazy" comments come from people who don't like Sam to start off with.
If Sam was soooo lazy, why did he pump out two albums in such a short time?
Also, life in the VH camp was quite busy during the Sam years, Ed had a kid, Sam got divorced/remarried. Al had a divorce or two. Ed Leffler died!
It's called a grown up life and problems.

Some idiots expect an album and tour one after the other, well these guys don't need to be pumping out an album ever year! They are getting older and I would suspect that there are other things in their lives besides VH.

But no, it's all Sam's fault! lol

The thing is, some people think Sammy is lazy and Dave is the hardest working man in show business. Yet Dave and VH had albums out at the same pace after Dave left VH.

The "Sammy is lazy" argument dried up and died when Marching to Mars was released 11 months before VD III.

Well I don't like Sammy, (shocker) and I do not think he's lazy!! The Lazy title got stuck on him by Ed VH. And then the people that believe Ed has never done anything wrong, of course believed it as the gospel. I think Sam was reluctant to work near the end of his tenure with VH because of all of the shit he was having to put up with from VH brothers and Ray Danniels. Don't blame him.

I do like Sammy, and was just pointing out something else that got in the way of making more music with Van Halen. Like what homeunit said, there was a lot of stuff going on with them and their families.

I think one naturally works harder when they're running their own business - or solo career.

Van Halen is essentially Ed's toy, and Sammy was part of the VH assembly line.

Sammy, on his own, can enjoy the full measure of his work.

Well, considering the negative environment Sammy had to deal with between For UCK and Balance, I don't blame him too much for all the years in between.

When you aren't comfortable where you "work," you don't like getting up in the morning and going in. If Danniels is in the ear of your bandmates and they're harassing you, you'd probably limit your time there.

M2M shows how much easier things are when the environment is positive.

    I wasn't bashing Ed.

    I wasn't even needling him.

Van Halen is Ed's band - for better or worse.

I think the 'Sam's Lazy' tag came about (rightly or wrongly, I'm not judging) b/c of the circumstances that happened from 1994 up through his departure.

Reportedly, one of the new songs on Hagar's "Unboxed" was slated for the new VH disc, which didn't seem to make some of the others real happy.

Then, during the recording of "Balance", the lyrical squabble over 'Amsterdam' occured, then no lyrics for 'Baluchitherium'.

Then, after Hagar agreed to be a part of the 'Twister' project (which reportedly was not forced upon him), he failed to cooperate w/ lyrical suggestions and such.

Perhaps the vibe (tension) over the last couple of years contributed to Hagar's seemingly 'stubborn' approach w/ the other members of VH. Maybe there were other reasons.

Then, members of VH find out that while they had trouble getting Hagar to write lyrics for their music, Hagar is trying to sell (and succeeds in some instances) lyrics/songs to Heart, Meat Loaf and Mr. Big.

Do I think Sam is lazy? No. I do think he is a lot like Roth in that Roth is known to have ADD, while I think Sam exhibits similar patterns of behavior (ie, he gets bored w/ the same things, same people, needs variety, yada, yada, yada...) Perhaps this is something that EVH and AVH did not understand nor care to.

I never bought the whole idea that Sammy was lazy either...Just unhappy in the last few years with the band. And when you're unhappy, you're not working at your optimium performance...

I think Sammy's lazy. Him pumping out sub-par albums faster than quality albums via VH is in no way a comparison.

Read the latest Inside mag with that guy who helped produce Balance. Sam wanted to spend two hours a day on the material and make his dinner appointments by 6. I can come up with "wam bam" in two hours too.
