How bout a poll that doesn't pit one side against the other? Hopefully this hasn't been done before, but what is your favorite guitar solo from the master, Edward Van Halen?

Since Eruption could conceivably win in a landslide, let's remove the instrumentals from the equation (Spanish Fly, Cathedral, 316, etc.) and make your vote for your favorite song solo break from Ed, with VH or without.

I'll start things off with my fave, the outro solo from 'Drop Dead Legs.'

And what a great groove to solo over on 'Hear About it Later.' That's one thing that both Eddie and Angus Young do really well, coming up with a great riff that's different from the rest of the song to rip over.

i agree about the groove- one "underneath solo groove" that i love is in the song "big trouble" off their early demo... great example of that- its too bad they never officially released that song...

Roth era - "Jump"...I think the solo fits the song so perfectly. I personally think Eddie's solos are better when slower, usually, because he tends to rehash certain licks when he plays fast, but this one just rips and it's so fresh.

Sammy era - This one is a toughy, but I have to go with "Aftershock" right now. It's short, but sweet and the progression after the solo rocks.

Gary album - "Once"...I like YTTD's, but it's too much of "Eddie" licks. Lots of rehashed stuff.

My choices change often. I prefer Eddie solos that go out of the ordinary for his playing. There are a few licks I hear in almost 50% of Van Halen solos and it's a signature sound, but sometimes I want something fresh, and those solos, to me are perfect.

"Push Comes To Shove" has always been my favorite. Ed was hanging with Allan Holdsworth at the time and the solo was inspired by him as Ed has said. I love it, it has a great feel.

I'll go with "I'm the One" (Dave) and "Big Fat Money" (Sammy).

You said it man, this to me is by far Ed's tastiest work. It shows his gifted natural ability to play slightly out of sync and make it sound bitchin' while landing on his feet, its the sort of solo that you can copy but it will never sound like Ed.
