Criteria:

1. The song may not be a cover tune.

2. The song should be what you feel is the best performance by all 4 members all in one song.

Ok, my selection for best song ever is (drum roll...): Meanstreet

Reasons:

#1. This has got to be Eddie's best performance ever. From the intro, to the solo Ed's performance is truly remarkable. The guitars on this song are definately it's strongest portion.

#2. Dave's lyrics are normally about partying, picking up chicks etc... Not in this song. They're dark and powerful.

#3. The harmonies by Michael and the drums from Alex are matched perfectly in this song. The only song I think Alex did a better job on would be Hot For Teacher.

My second choice would have to be Panama.

The guitar riff alone in Panama makes it beautiful, but Mike compliments Dave so perfectly and Alex's drum parts are also amazing.

It was hard to pick just one, but Meanstreet is my first choice, with Panama being a close second.

Unchained is their best song without a doubt.

But it sounds as though you may be looking for a song that defines Van HALEN.

That being the case, it's gotta be "I'm The One.

Right away you are assaulted with Eddie's in your face riff.. A riff so damned good that even Eddie himself, by his own admission, forgot how to play after 11 years of Hagar imposed exile from the catalog.

Then Alex kicks in with a jazz inspired shuffle beat that would form the basis of many other Van HALEN classics to come. Not the typical heavy rock rhythym at all.

Then Dave brings it right to the point as only Dave can, with the unmistakable Van HALEN attitude:
We came here to entertain you.
Leaving here we aggravate you.
Don't you know it means the same to me?

And the icing on the cake as always:

Harmonies courtesy of one Mr Sobolewski.

Throw in some humor with a barber shop quartet harmony at the end... THIS is Van Fucking HALEN!!!
Eat Us And Smile

Welcome back, Van HALEN!!!!

...It's the BAND and Dave is really the cat that can front VH. He sang his ASS off and was really cool. No cheese here guys, this is filet Mignon! - Steve Lukather's comment after witnessing a Van HALEN 2007 rehearsal

This is friggin' HARD!

In the end, I think I have to agree with dj88 on Mean Street. FORD is also correct that "I'm The One" is a defining song, for the reasons he mentioned. Other good candidates from the Roth era, IMO, are Hot For Teacher (this has all the "fun" elements that make VH great) and Girl Gone Bad (perhaps the best playing EVER by Alex and Eddie). It's a bit harder to come up with defining songs from the Hagar era, but I'd have to go with Finish What Ya Started, Right Now, and Judgement Day.

I originally meant all eras, but maybe it is better to break it down by era.

I don't know the Hagar era enough to answer my own question so I'll just throw out my favorite Hagar song: Finish What You Started.

I don't have any reasons other than the song gets my toe tapping.

You could probably get a different answer just about every time you ask me, but the one that you'd probably get the most would be "Unchained". The way that superhuman riff grabs you by the nards and never lets go just can't be topped!

Honorable mentions to:
Little Guitars
Somebody Get me a Doctor
Romeo Delight

Best Sam-era tune:
(tie) Aftershock/Humans Being

"Panama" or "Jump." I personally think "Panama" is the best tune. It's got everything important and necessary.

Why Can't This Be Love is my favorite!!! I love the lyrics, the sound of it, and the parts when Sammy sings to Eddie's guitar is wicked!

This ain't easy...

I agree that "I'm The One" embodies all that Van Halen is, and, at times, what they should be, lest they forgot...

I am also a huge fan of 1984, an album that I consider their very best. Dave's voice reached it's pinnacle on 1984; Ed & Al's performance was phenominal...Overall mix/balance was right on the money. Songs? I'd have to name "Panama" "Drop Dead Legs" "Girl Gone Bad" and "House Of Pain" as favorites...

Other notable mention: "Me Wise Magic".

Dave - Mean Street - awesome performance from all four. This is my absolute fave!!!
Sammy - Poundcake/Seventh Seal/Humans Being - I love these songs and hence can't separate them.
Gary - From Afar - Great guitar and drums and I love the fact that it is so different to what we expect from Van Halen.

Though my all time favorite VH song is "Dirty Movies" I don't believe that song DEFINTES Van Halen as much as this song (Which is also one of my all time favorites: "I'M THE ONE"
