Is Ed bitter? It sure seems like it. I'm a little surprised we didn't get some kind of holiday message. Then again, I probably shouldn't be surprised, it doesn't seem like they are motivated enough to post a message about anything. Well I guess we did get the we're shutting down the pleasure dome, Happy Holidays message. Maybe Ed feels like the fans drove Gary out of the band? It seems like he has tried to make a deal with Dave but can't and Sam has no interest in coming back. So perhaps Ed is bitter and has just given up? Very Odd.

Oh well, if you read this Ed, I hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas, and Happy and Healthy New Year. Thanks for providing the soundtrack for the last 23 years of my life.

Chris, I'm suprised you ask this question. Being in tune with the VH scene as you are surely you already know the answer.

For those who don't know it,.........

No, Eddie Van Halen does not give a flying fuck about you, or us. After all he is EDDIE FUCKING VAN HALEN, and he plays guitar. WE are Joe Blow. HE is married to Valerie Bertinelli, WE are not.

He has more money than most of us, plays a guitar MUCH better than any of us EVER WILL, and he's having sex with Valerie Bertinelli.

Is Ed bitter? You bet he is. VHIII sold less than half a million copies, and played to less than half full arenas during the subsequent tour.
Bon Jovi is a bigger draw in Europe than VH, enough of a reason for anyone to be upset. Bon Jovi outselling VH???? Where's my fucking gun? Some Europeans need to be brutally murdered in the name of rock 'n roll.

If I was Eddie, I WOULD hang it up. The rock scene is crap right now (Creed) and redundant music (Tool, Godsmack, Sevendust) is in control.
The great unwashed prefers crap (Creed, Creed and Creed), so let them have it. Tool out.

Well Tool, I guess I always hope for the best in people. Maybe you're right. I've never met the man in person, in interviews he usually seems pretty down to earth. The only time I've seem him get a little nasty is when the inevitable question of Dave returning comes up.

The more I think about it, the more I believe that the guys are just a product of an era that didn't have all this technology, and they just refuse to embrace the changes. Maybe they feel like it's more of a responsibility than they are willing to take on.

I'm going to send this to the Opinions/Speculation forum to be continued there.

this is a very good question-my guess is that ed is bitter, even though he has wealth beyond imagination and talent of mozart.cancer and poor
sales of vhiii along with a dramatic change in the sound of hard rock have bummed him out.when they replaced dave with sam the hard rockin sound was still alive on the charts so it worked.but when they did the same with gary rock had changed to a new style and nobody under 30 was buying the vh sound and neither were the fm stations that play the charts. yeah i think ed was very bitter
he never lost in music but this was his first defeat.i hope that once the dust settles vh will realize the only way to regroup is to get dave or sam back and play the hits go on a summer tour then release some new music.any other combination
unless ed goes solo with some big name singer ala
santana -thomas will not work.and ed will just get even more bitter.

I don't know if Ed's as "bitter" as he is jaded. He's been around and on top of the world for over 23 years, and as was already mentioned, he's a multi-gazillionaire, (regardless of how many copies VHIII sold) he's married to Valerie Bertinelli, plus he pretty much stands alone with Jimi Hendrix as the most revolutionary and important rock guitarists ever, so really... what would he possibly have to be bitter ABOUT? No, I think for the most part from what little we've heard from him lately, he's really just jaded and kinda tired of the whole rock 'n' roll circus thing. Not to mention, he's had some rather more important things to deal with lately. It's really not that uncommon an occurrence among rock 'n' roll veterans to just go through a complete burnout phase, to turn rather introspective and reclusive over time. Hell, it's pretty much happened at one time or another to EVERYONE whose managed to achieve his level of success and longevity. The good thing is, musicians live to create, it's really all they know, and they almost always tend to snap out of it eventually when they can no longer deny their creative nature.

It would be nice to see the guys display a tad more foresight though, if they're even allowing for the possibility of performing together again at some point in the future. Because right now, (pardon the pun) whomever is in charge of their PR Department is brutally incompetent.

Well, I think Ed went through a very bitter stage for a while, but I think there's no issue there anymore. Ed's priorities have obviously changed, and good for him.
I think he cares about his fans just fine, but he doesn't feel a need to cater to them - remember, Ed's always described himself as a shy geek and not very social. Plus everyone that's ever met him seems to make their accounts of him sound like a friendly guy.
