I thought about it the other day, if you gave Dave the riff from Ballot or the Bullet, that would have smoked!! I can almost hear Dave tearing into that one. It wasn't terribly bad with Gary, but I hated the lyrics.

Actually, I was thinking Sammy would have done a better job with it. I agree that the lyrics don't fit the song that well.

Agreed. The music to that song kicks, but Gary's lyrics are SOOOOOO bad!

Gary is obviously trying to sound "political" and "intellectual" but instead the lyrics come off as forced and rather sophmoric and lame IMHO!

I think the question is "Has Gary Cherone ever written good lyrics for anything?" And in my opinion the answer to that Q is a big "NO!" Even the stuff he did with Extreme was stupid (i.e. "Get the Funk Out" or whatever that was called.) Even the good songs on VHIII have shit lyrics...

I think Dave or Sammy both would have done a thousand times better with the crap on that album if they had to sing over it but then again do you think Dave would have actually agreed to do half of those songs? I don't. Why do you think it took so long for Eddie to find something that Dave would sing over for BOV1? It's probably because Dave sifts through 10 songs of shit that Eddie gives him until there's something worth a shit to sing over. Damn, they need Dave back bad..

Several of Extreme's songs were "political", so it shouldn't have been any surprise that it woud show up on III.

I agree that Dave's voice would have been a great fit for 'Ballot or the Bullet'. It's a rough and edgy kind of song. Perfect for the Diamond One.

If you are familiar with Extreme, there's nothing (lyrically) on Van Halen III that will surprise you. Ballot of the Bullet is certainly not new territory for Gary.

The bottom line is, Gary wasn't made for rock and roll stardom, he's way too outside the mainstream in the material he writes. And I think that's great, let Dave and Sammy be rock stars, everybody doesn't have to be like them.

I've been listening to A LOT of Extreme lately, and it's just further enhanced my love of VH III. Hated it when it came out, but every time I listen to it I like it more and more. It's a better album than OU812 or FUCK, and is just as good as Balance or 5150.

And yes, I did just say that.

I am aware that the lyrics on VHIII are not much of a stretch for Gary. I own 1 Extreme album (Pornograffiti) Picked it up in a used bin for $5.99 a few weeks before VHIII came out. Bought it so I would sorta attempt to get familiarized with Gary, knowing he would be lead vox. on the next VH album.....

I know Gary writes from an unusual very "unrock-God" point of view...And that's fine, nothing wrong with that point of view or perspective. Problem is, despite his good intentions, I still think a LOT of Gary's lyrics (OK admittedly I only have Pornograffiti and VHII to go by) are pretty forced and sophmoric in nature. I dunno...It seems like he is trying too hard to be "intellectual" and "political"....

As for your last statement Glenn: WOW! I respect your opinion 100%, but agree with it 0% ! It's cool though, we all have our own opinions!

Yeah Glenn I thought that was a bit of a stretch, but everyone has the right to their own opinion. I like VH3, but I still think it is the worst of the Van Halen albums.

Glenn, I suppose you had to figure you would get a bunch of responses to your last statment! That's cool. But I honestly can't agree with it....Even Sammy era VH at it's worst (ie: Source Of Infection---Lyrics not so much the music to this song) is MILES better then VHIII IMHO)

BALLOT OR THE BULLET, is not a song I would ever listen to by VH. Terrible lyrically. The music is not bad, riff is strong.

You are correct guys, Gary Cherone is not a Rock N Roll stardom kind of guy. His lyrics are him, and that s fine if thats what you like.

It's cool, I don't expect anyone to agree with me, it's not my job to convert anyone to my tastes in music.

To be perfectly honest, I'm really starting to find that the Sammy era of Van Halen is not aging well at all. Whereas the Dave era still sounds fresh to me, I can't say the same for 5150, OU812, FUCK or Balance. I still love them of course, and there is a lot of great music there that is part of the Van Halen career.

Van Halen III is massively flawed, the production isn't right, and Gary sounds worse than he does on any of the Extreme albums. I'm not blind to its shortcomings at all. But I love it anyway.

    Eddie made a lot of seemingly odd choices at that time, but I'm reminded of a quote by Neil Young about Heart of Gold, his biggest early hit. Neil said;

quote:
This song put me in the middle of the road. Travelling there soon became a bore so I headed for the ditch. A rougher ride but I saw more interesting people there.

That sums it up for me.

May I take this opportunity to be the 428th person to remind you, Glenn, to please put down the crack pipe. You're getting out of hand now!

For me, it's been much the opposite. I find the Hagar stuff more 'lasting', and to me the Dave stuff is just melting into the 'classic rock heap' of radio that I have been bombarded with for years now. I hear Dave-era alongside Ted Nugent and Zeppelin and stuff like that, which I don't like, and by association, the Dave stuff becomes less and less valuable to me. 1984 is the exception to that rule (except for Panama; I really don't want to hear that song again for a few years; I've had enough of it)

I admire some of the efforts on VH3, but not the end result. I think, in time, if there would be 2 or 3 more VH releases in the future (a BIG 'if'), then some of the gestures on 3 will fit into a larger picture and I'll start to appreciate it more. As for now, it doesn't make for a good 'final movement' in the ongoing VH opus.
    Don't bark at me...I didn't name ya.
