Vai's amp is only the last stage in a huge arsenal of effects. Like Ed, Vai can sound like himself through anything he uses. He practiced for 12-13 hours a day for years. I don't think the amp would make very much difference if you had his talent, but again, he does use a large no. of effects as part of his sound.

Some days an hour or two. other days I don't feel like picking it up at all. We rehearse 2 nights a week, so I have to play then. Summer means a lot more outside gigs so that's fun.

When you say you practice 10 hours a day during the summer, do you actually practice, or PLAY for 10 hours?

I recall Vai's 10 hour workout from Guitar World about 10 years ago or so...doing that all day every day would have made me quit playing for good. Sheesh!

Just a warning about that type of schedule-first, I hope you take care of your tendons, muscles, ligaments, and diet, or you could really hurt yourself. Second, there have been hundreds of players who practiced like that, developed flawless yet faceless technique, and have since given up or disappeared. There is more to music than chops, and having an interesting life enriches it tremendously. Last, your ass HAS to hurt after all that.

If you concentrate your practicing efforts well, you can achieve just as much in considerably less time. There have been times when I would spend 12 hours practicing, but honestly anything past 4 hours was defeated by the law of diminishing returns. Nowadays I put in ONE solid hour a day and that is enough to keep me in good form.

When I practice that long I do everything. I play along with the radio, im lucky and have perfect pitch, also I learn some new songs, maybe some scales, I also write my own music and think of vocals etc, i also try combining music styles and comming up with my own stlye. My band also practices every friday, we play from about 3:00 to 10:30 .I plan on making music a lifetime job. I love playing guitar I never plan on giving it up.

Edward Van Halen--your determination is admirable and very rare nowadays. When you say you wish to make your living doing it, does that include the possibility of wedding bands, studio session work, teaching, as well as being in a band? These are some of MANY avenues you have to possibly consider pursuing. My advice, for what it's worth, is to do you best to become an excellent sight reader---out of every 100 players who can really play well, I would guess only ONE of them is a good sight reader. That makes it a very scarce, and therefore valuable, skill.

Also, I don't know how old you are, but taking some music appreciation classes, piano, theory, voice classes, etc., even at a community college can work WONDERS! If I knew the things I know now when I began playing, I would have taken a much different approach to things. General musicianship is sorely lacking among many of today's players. As dull as a lot of it may seem, all these things add up and can make you a very formidable musical entity.

Also, some basic physics, electric/electronics, and sound engineering knowledge goes a LONG way. So tune in to Bill Nye or Mr. Wizard when you can.

And always keep this in the back of your mind while you practice/study: if you were to lose the ability to play, would you still be able to offer the world something musically? When you can HONESTLY answer 'yes' to that question, then you will have crossed over the line from 'guitarist' to 'musician'.

Iam just turned 16 and plan on taking some music classes in highschool. Next year I signed up for electronic music( make music using computers /midi etc) and intro to modern pop rock and jazz. Do you recommend music theory? Is it difficult? I never thought about that ..the losing ability to play guitar and playing some sort of music still...wow really got me thinking. Thanks for your advise and support abe!

EVH....theory is a MUST! For a lot of people it starts off seeming very hard, but then, in an instant, something 'clicks' and somehow it ALL starts to make sense. Theory assists in composition, learning a new piece, gives you a fresh source of inspiration, etc. So don't be intimidated by theory; it's not bad once you get into it.
