    Hey,

I was just at Austin Guitar Center shreddin' on an Axis to kill some time and I noticed the neck is alot wider than on my quilt-top Axis and quilt-top EVH MM.

Anybody now how I can get one of these new wider necks on my Axis? I guess if I change the neck, I would have to replace the Floyd too.

    Thanks,
    Dan

Technically by the book, you wouldn't need to change the floyd but you are supposed to change the nut to fit the neck properly, and they make nuts that have the same string spacing as another but accomadate a wider neck etc etc.
But having said that it's up to you, there are no rules, I have had customers request a 1-5\8" nut be put on a 1-11\16" neck
even though they make a 1-11\16" nut that has the same string spacing as the 1-5\8" nut, yea I just lost you right there didn't I
so you don't even have to change the nut, it may look a little funny having a smaller nut than your supposed to but it doesn't hurt anything.

    Rol,

When you refer to the nut are you talking about the thing that locks the strings down at the top of the headstock???

Sorry I don't understand all this guitar jargon yet; ha, ha, ha...

    Thanks,
    Dan

Yo Rol...Doc Dryer here...ACTUALLY, there IS ANOTHER SOLUTION...R-2 locking nuts are 1 5/8" - PERIOD...BUT, an R-3 is 1 11/16", and SO IS an R-4...The DIFFERENCE is that the R-3 nut has tighter string spacing {the SAME as an R-2's spacing} and is designed for a neck that is 1 11/16", but is BOUND, like a Jackson Soloist...The R-4 nut is ALSO 1 11/16", but with WIDER string spacing for an unbound neck...The R-5 is a full 1 3/4", like the old Kramer Barettas

That's great news about the neck... I've owned the axis and LOVED it but could not get used to the extremely narrow neck. I emailed EB/MM at least two times asking if they had any plans to widden the neck... because I know I'm not the only one who's complained about it. They responded
"not at this time" ir something to that effect but that was two years ago perhaps they finally decided to change it.. I'll have to check out thier site to see if the specs are different.

For whatever it's worth, you'll find that original R-2 nut that came on the original EVH's and later on the Axis models is spaced differently than an R-2 nut made for a real Floyd trem.
They eventually changed the axis bridge, so I'm assuming they changed the nut as well.

Just recieved an email from Curt at EB/MM.. They DID NOT widen the neck... The Axis is still built with the same specs as it has always been.

Some confusion may result from the fact that EB/MM did widen the neck by 1/32" at the 22nd fret when the EVH model was renamed the Axis. There are a few other small things that seperate the Axis from the EVH.

If you're saying that the axis neck is the same as the EVH neck, except for a 1/32" widening at the heal I think there's a no. of EVH owners who'd disagree. The necks don't feel alike.

I'm going to settle this issue once and for all.

I'm going to take my 1999 Axis to Guitar Center and measure it against one of their new Axis' that I claim have been changed from a narrow to a wider neck.

    Okay, I'm full of shit!

We measured the necks and they're the same. Then we checked the string
spacing and they're the same as far a we can tell.

We (guitar center clerk and I) think the difference is just because my
guitar is worked in and the new one isn't. She said it felt different
    too.

    Later,
    Dan

Since they're not following the EVh specs anymore I'm thinking maybe the difference is due to the guy who did the final sanding on the neck.

What do you mean? From day one the Axis has been 1/32' bigger at the 22 fret compared to the EVH model. The Axis is exremely close but the neck was never "exactly" the same as the EVH. Although most people would probably say a 1/32" increase in the upper part of the neck is hardly worth mentioning.. The Axis and EVH are still 99.8% the same guitar.
