Anyone who visits VHlinks is aware of Ed's guitar resume and his ongoing (though not lately) contribution to rock guitar, but what is your personal favorite "Eddieism?" (Guitar trick or idiosyncrasy)

There is so much to choose from:

two hand tapping, tapped artifical harmonics, pinched harmonics, "machine-gun" harmonics, whammy bar dives, the horse, the elephant, use of the drill, volume swells, legato, tremolo picking, etc......infinity

For me -- its the horse. The first thing I do when I plug in my guitar is rake that b string and grab the whammy bar. I love it. I don't know why, but to me, that guitar effect is the "1980's." It represents rock guitar "excessiveness" that Ed made cool in the 1980s. God I miss rock guitar!

I would have to say his phrasing. He doesn't just run thru scales. He picks odd notes which work. I love the way he incorporates open strings in his runs as well!

And his rythme playing is amazing!!

For me, it's the way his solos always seem to flow in a coherent way, even if, on paper, they look like a mess. His phrasing is so inherently MUSICAL, even if his note choice isn't 'normal' at times. I can hear a musical conversation when he plays; something I DON'T hear in many other players.

i gotta agree, although his bag of tricks is awesome ..its his choice of notes and phrasing in his solos that boggles me...his pinky speed ,strength, and reach are incredible too !...man i listen to those old 76 and 77 boots where he s doing those really odd sounding pull offs and hammers and im going what the hell? what notes are those?....anyone else notice that on those old boots?

I'd normally say his two-handed tapping or hammer-ons, but anyone can do that. I can on my acoustic, which is nothing special. I always like his Little Guitars Inro piece where he plays really fast on the high strings and taps on the low E string. That's not too hard either, but is cool. His false harmonics are nice on the ear and I think are sorta difficult to do. And his Cathedral piece(the way it's done)is awesome also.

yeah, thats what im saying home....i am much more interested in his right hand technique than his tapping technique...the 76 stuff is really wild when he was using the ibanez destroyer before he hacked it up and theres no whammy stuff or tapping...the golden west ballroom 76 stuff i just listen to his little fills and solos like on "we die young" and i get chills..lol

His patened "Flying Eddie", of course not a trick on the frettboard but it just looks so damn awesome! Lol ... no really I would go with his "horsie" whammy bar effects more than anything.

The thing I like about Ed is his rhythm playing. He never just strums away at power chords, he always comes up with somethin cool. But I guess thats really not an "eddieism" so I will go with his use of harmonics (take your pick on which kind).

God,there's so many.......
Used to think the two-hand tapping was unbelievable till I learned to do it. I also like the way he changes the whole solo in some live tunes like "5150",it works with the song and it's reminiscent of Cathedral.
Yes,his rhythm is overlooked by most who just pay attention to the tricks.

He can get quite a stretch with his fingers!! Man, I have a hard enough time stretching my fingers apart (5 frets) during parts of Spanish Fly. I once read an interview and Eddie said that on the high E string he can reach from the 5th fret to the 12th fret!! I can only reach from like the 5th to the 10th (on a good day ). But my fingers aren't too long either.

I like it when he combines bends with tapping (a la Panama solo etc)

But also the ping-ping harmonic effects like the start of Women in Love...
It'll all end in beers...
