i was at some shredders site and on the message board, they were talkin bout practicing 10 to 12 fuckin hours a day and writing out details of goals and what they were going to play. in all my life, i never once though to write a novel about my session before i played guitar. how do you all go about practicing?

I was never THAT serious to play stinkin' 12 hours a day. The thing is, I don't practice, never have in the true sense, I just jam and try different things. When I was learning to play, I would sit and try to learn songs, but I never sat and practiced scales and finger exercises like some people do. See to me, what you described above, is the worst thing a rock player could do. If you plot out every nook and cranny, then it has more to do with technique rather than feeling. Technique has its place in music, but you can't sacrifice everything else for that. Remember this, some of the greatest guitar solos of all time were made up on the spot, with no aforethought. Now, go get your axe and PLAY!! If you have trouble with something work through it, but still play.

first off 10 to 12 hours a day is rediculous for anything....i usually play/practice 2 to 4 hours when i play..do i say ive got to practice my scales? no...i might find some tab or something i like and learn that riff or lick if i feel like playing a scale i will but usually i move it around to see how it sounds at differnt spots or combine it with other runs...mostly i play along with cd s and aside from the solos and such i try to put my own fills and licks in..ive never considered playing as practice..i just love to play and ive always been complimented on my playing and been asked to join a band a few times...i think its just more than practicing scales to be a guitarist...its knowing about tone and how to dial it in...making your guitar create textures a getting weird funky sounds with your hands and effects...just listening to your guitar and bending a note or notes just going for feeling..ect.ect....so i think theres more to it than just playing scales all day.....

Well when I was in junior high I used to play from the time I got home around 2:30 to 11 at night. I would try writting stuff and most of the time I would play along to all the Roth era albums. I sometimes think now can anyone get any better then they are? Also, the internet has put my hours down, if I don't get to this site once or twice every hour I might go into a coma.

At the beginning I practiced for about 5 to 7 hours a day....then I knew how to manage my time to learn what I wanted and needed to learn. Then when I joined a band that played out..I couldn't practice as much ...all we did was rehearse 35 - 40 songs 4 days a week!!! It really got me in a rut playing the same old "popular" songs that the average bar hopper recognizes. Then I decided to quit the band and record what I wanted to do (which lead to nothing but self-satisfaction) I still play guitar but I wish I had more time...I have 2 boys (2 and 3) and a job (50 to 55 hrs a week) But it seems that when I jump back on the guitar I can usually play what I want to ...I guess it was all the practice from the beginning.....so anyways: PRACTICE till you bleed!!!!!! It will pay off!!!

A little bit of discipline is nessecary when practicing, but 12 hrs a day?? With note pads and schedules?? Kinda takes the fun out of it for me. It may work for some, but if I had to go this route, I'd quit guitar and pick something more enjoyable.

1--and you notice that the guys who plot it out don't play anywhere! where's their big HIT???

my favorite eddie stuff is not his fast playing--rather the crazy noise he makes!

One year, I worked at a TV station in the middle of the night as a master control operator,, i had to only work every 15 mins for 2 mins!Nobody was there but me so I always took my guitar. I played ALOT of guitar that year,, about 8hours a day plus band practice,, but that was only for about a year,

but my bands were not about the shred stuff, i just wanted to make sure I wouldn't mess up for the gig(but somehow I always managed to mess up anyway! )

clean perfect playing is boring to me. if that is what a 10 hour a day will get you, who would want to play.

In the early days, I'd pickup my guitar when I got home and wouldn't put it down till I went to bed, but over the years that changed.
We rehearse 3 nights a week, so now I just plink away, usually without an amp in front of the t.v. set, or when the mood strikes me. So much for disipline.

To me, 10-12 hrs. a day is overkill. Sounds like it is too structured-takes all the fun out of it if you ask me. I know I'll never be a great guitarist, but I have a hell of a lot of fun playing no matter how bad I am!

Jeez, ten hours a day would definitly be overkill for me. I could never write out what I would do in advance either. Guitar = fun.
Besides ya gotta have time to listen to the man.

What is guitar practice without inspiration of music, huh? And what better inspiration than to listen to "the man."
