Well I finally broke down and bought a vintage MXR flanger, got it for $100 or so and I must say *wow* is there a difference in tone in this thing over my Boss Flanger or what !! I thought the Boss was really good too.
The MXR is just so smooth and warm I'll never use another flanger again.

Oh yeah, man - I got mine a couple years ago, and it's amazing comparing it to other units. Picked up an old Phase 90 around the same time. Love it.

How does it compare to the reissue(dunlop)MXR flanger does it come close?
"Well, he's an intelligent, well-read guy. But it's like he can't connect the dots somehow." (EVH Guitar World, March 1998).

GP: "Did you use a pick for "Spanish Fly"?

EVH: "Yeah, except for the part near the end that sounds like Montoya or something."

I don't really hear a difference between the two. If anything the reissue is quieter.

That's more or less the way it sounded to me too.
They put the power supply into it with a wall wart to quiet it down.
New, or original, it does have it's own sound.

So does the reissue get a pretty good VH1-ish flange tone?
Right Now...My gf is probably reading my posts.

Gee how did I know that was coming, lol?

The MXR is the one Ed used so it's the unit to use. The most important thing though is the amp, you have to dial in a pretty damned close Ed tone to be able to get the Flanger to sound right.

I find that the MXR really reacts to the gear you're using. I have an old modded Marshall that IMO does the early VH tone spot on. I don't use that particular tone but I did set it up once or twice to get the Unchained tone and with the right MXR setting it's pretty much that tone.
