    Hey guys...
Can anyone help me out here? Having some amp trouble, let me explain...
I have a Carvin Nomad 1x12 combo. It has 5 12ax7's and 4 el84's. Well its decided to stop working on me. I thought it was the tubes initially, but after replacing them with others that I know worked, it was still a no go. But here's whats happening...2 of the 5 12ax7's are not lighting up when the amp is powered. They should, because I also have the head version of the amp in which they do. If you're facing the rear of the amp, its the 2 12ax7's closest to the right side. Carvin wants me to send the amp to them to be repaired with a flat rate of $160 plus shipping (which would be a lot from CT to CA). Thats too expensive. Any suggestions on how to get it fixed? Know any good techs in the CT area by any chance? Thanks!

Steely, are the EL-84's lighting up?
Also, are the other 12ax7's glowing brighter than usual?
When you turn the vol. up with no chord plugged in is there any noise or hiss at all?
Don't turn the amp on any longer than you have to, to check these things out.

Great, thanks for the reply Tribb.
The el84's are all lighting up...as well as the other three 12ax7's. They don't seem to be any brighter than usual to me, but I suppose they could be a little and I might not know. When I turn the volume up with no cord I do get a little hum and hiss noise. Any ideas?

If the first two tubes won't light, your problem is likely in the input stage of the preamp board somewhere. You get get hiss, so your power amp seems to be ok.

The good news: There isn't much wrong with your amp. I suspect an internal high voltage or heater fuse, or maybe a solder joint that went bad somewhere.

The Bad news: You will likely have a hard time getting anyone in your area to work on it. I talk to techs every day, from all over the country. Most of them will tell you that Carvin won't authorize service centers, and won't send a schematic. I can't say that from personal experience, but that is what I have been told.

In any case, check around at your local music stores. Ask who does amp repair in the area. You should at least, be able to find someone willing to take a look. Tube amps designs aren't that mysterious. If it is just the fuses, you won't be looking at much of a bill.

If it is more serious than that, your only option may be to send it to Carvin. $160 seems a little high to me though, for a problem like that.
