Does Ed use a flanger or a phaser on the riff for this? (sorry I don't know the difference between the two different effects

A Flanger is used, and the differnce in a nut shell is that the Flanger is a more harsh in your face effect while the Chorus is subtle unless you crank the effect.

Both modulate the tone of your sound by producing
another note on top of the one you just played , "bending" it and then that note resonates against your original note, in a nut shell of coarse.
Someone will come on here and tell you about it
in ungodly boring detail and you won't know if you should build a rocket or play guitar

A flanger "whooshes", and a phaser "swishes".
Ed used both sparingly and just turned them on and off in parts of songs.
The phaser was used mostly for solos to help the notes stand out a bit better.
Now for my rocket demonstration.

Also, flangers will actualy produce and audible change in pitch, while the phaser will produce more of a change in tone (like a tone control sweeping thru it's band).

Also, to get that exact sound you have to get an MXR M117 flanger. For years I tried every brand under the sun to get close to it, but to my knowledge no other brand can do THAT sound. When I finally acquired an old MXR flanger I was in heaven.
