The frankenstrat is swamp ash. theres some debate on the 5150 between it being alder or ash.

I thought I read in one of the early Ed interviews that the body was either standard ash or alder. Don't quote me though!

I think the point KATN is making is that he has first hand knowledge as well. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Rol mentioned that KATN used to work on Ed's guitars or there about and basically taught Rol what he knows. Don't mean to start a piss contest, but there was some typoe of reference about a month or two ago. Space Tape and KATN, can you guys give us a little more background on what you know about the guitars and how you came about it? Thanks!

I remember Ed saying in a few guitarworld interviews his frankenstrat being heavier than a les paul. So swamp ash would definately be out of the question.

Hey guys,
Not to make the issue more confusing, but I actually had a conversation with Mike Charvel at Wayne Guitars about this last week...

Like most of you guys, I've always read that Ed's Frank was pretty damn heavy. In light of that, The Inside magazine (issue #9) saying that the body was northern ash made sense. But Mike told me, "no way, that is alder". He actually said the the man himself was in the shop and said it was alder (he also mentioned that Ed was happy and full of energy ). When I asked him about all the printed articles saying it was ash, he said that Ed saying it was ash was all part of his smokescreen to keep people from latching on to his sound. Plus, Mike gave me a pretty good explanation as to why the sound he gets is "alder-ish" sounding as opposed to ash. Hell, maybe Mike was throwing me the smokscreen on Ed's behalf... doubt that though.

Another thing to consider... why would the Frank be made of northern ash? From what I know, the Chravel and Boogie bodies of that time were made to be replicas of the 50's style strats and if I remember correctly, weren't the 50's strats primarily swamp ash? Just a thought...

My 2 cents? Hell, I have know idea at this point. With all the lies Ed has told about his equipment to protect his sound (and rightfully so), I'm not sure what I believe.

When I look at the wood that is showing through the chipped paint of the Frnaky, it seems too dark to be alder. Not sure of any type of finish or coating that could be on the wood, but doesn't northern ash get dark like that? The 5150 in my opinion, from what is showing through the chipped paint looks like alder to me.

Anyways, sorry to add to the confusion, but this is an interesting debate...
