i've been playing just over 3 years (learnt chords years ago then stopped) and have finally got around to learning scales. i know A minor pentatonic scales thanks to zakk wylde's column in guitarworld magazine and i got taught blues scales although i was a little under the influence at the time

which other scale patterns do people recommend learning?

Major and harmonic Minors are always a good bet.

is a good place to mess around. I have always Liked C scales. No real reason for it I just like them. If I'm not mistaken the Solo for No one like you is written in C major and Have you ever loved a woman by Clapton is written in C Blues.

This link, http://guitar-masters.com/, has some very useful info throughout...scales and chord studies amongst other things.

I like stringing the octaves together so I'm all over the fretboard...Learning CHORD scales is another exercise I like...

Learn the Major scales in all positions...that way you can alter it to find the other modes.

That's cool, once you get the hang of modes (there not that hard when you understand how to find them) it really opens you playing up.

i thnk that thje minor pentatonic scale is one of the most important for guys that wanan plays and start to be soloist .
That for one simple reason ... it's a simple scale , no difficult to learn or play , and with a mint of fantasy it gots a lot of patterns on it ... knowing this scale you can play so many stuff in all dhords progs .

Then ... when ya know quite good this scale you may start with some scales that are more difficults ... like minor or major scale progress ... in more than two octaves , studying them step by step using the intervales of a scale or just a fast pattern .

More important is how ya use the pick ... the right hand gotta be able to pick fast and at the same time hammering on scales for getting more "clean " progression and precision .
This means that we have to study a lot the two aspects of both hands ... right for the picks ... left for the position at the right time in the right time .

C ya later ...
Hey Tribb ... how's doing ?
