I just wanted to show off the new toy that I've been working on for the last couple of months.

Well, on Christmas Eve the mail man delivered the last of my guitar stuff (Kinman AVN '62s). I wired them up and put everything back together and started the process of adjusting the pickup heights for the best sound possible. I have to tell you, this thing looks and sounds great. The Kinman single coils are actually QUIETER than the Seymour Duncan Custom/Custom humbucker!!! And the output levels are pretty damn close to the same, so I didn't have to lower the humbucker way down to get it to match the single coil signal!

Anyway, here are a few crappy pics. The pics are not that great, but the room isn't well lighted and I was in a bit of a rush this morning.

The only thing left to do is to put something on the headstock. I was going to put the Warmoth decal on, but I messed it up. Then I thought I would inlay "Prages" in rosewood on it, but after doing a little testing with the dremel, that may not be such a good idea. Now, I think I've decided that I'll just stencil "Prages" on it with some kind of paint.

Now that is one NICE looking guitar.
I like your taste in single coil pickups too.
I use Kinmans in my strats, and the 62's are great.
It just takes a bit of trial and error to get the height just right.
You want to keep the Kinmans low to get a real stratty kind of tone.
How come the p/u covers are black and say HX?
The 62's are AVN's. Is it a new type of cover?

Yeah, I guess it's just a new cover. He gives you a choice of white or black, with or without logo's. The pickups are AVN 62's, at least that's what the box says (and that's what I ordered). I haven't really played around with the height much because I've been pretty busy all week. They sound great clean, I need to do some work on the overdrive sound.

About what height do you have yours set at?

Chris is a very honest guy so I wouldn't worry about that.
The AVN series are considered a vintage sounding pickup so you might have to raise them up to get them to overdrive more. That will take a lot of the vintage tone away, but it's hard to get them to overdrive to any extent if they're low, and might be hard to do even when they're higher unless your amp has a lot of gain.
They're designed for that SRV kind of Texas overdrive and they do that really well when pushed, but it's not the same kind of OD you get with a custom custom.

Dude;
first of all NICE,VERY NICE . Now a few questions. Is that a oil finished neck? What kind of switch,3 way or 5 way? What pick ups do you have tone control over?I ask all this because I have a similar project going on.

Thanks everybody for the compliments.

To answer your questions, stratman:

It's an unfinished neck. Not finishing it voids the warranty from Warmoth, but I love the feel of an unfinished neck and if that means having to take extra care of and/or replace the neck in a couple of years, that's fine with me.

It's a 5-Way switch. It's wired for:

1-Humbucker
2-Split humbucker and middle
3-Middle
4-Middle and neck
5-Neck

I'm toying with the idea of adding a push pull switch so I can have all three pickups at once, or bridge and neck, but I'm going to give this wiring time since I'll probably not really have need for the custom wiring.

It's a master volume, master tone. All three pickups are wired to the same volume and tone. My biggest grief with Strats is that the volume knob gets in the way of my pinky (I ancor my pinky when I play). I just used two knobs and moved the volume away from my pinky.

Prages, you don't need my praise, but I thought I'd give credit where it is due, and let you know that I think your guitar is really, really cool.

Prages, that guitar is beautiful!

I love the quilt top on it. If it was me, I'd just be getting such a buzz out of knowing that I had built it.

Hope it gives you as much joy to play and to listen to...
