This has been buggin' the hell out of me. Ed used the Wolfs on BOV I and III, right? OK, then how did he accomplish those wammy pull-ups combined with the sustaniac pickup on "Me Wise Magic" and "Year to the Day" if the D-tuna has to have a flush mounted trem?

I think he used a Wolfgang with a Transtrem rather than the normal Floyd Rose setup. But I'm not sure.

That's correct Dtuned. The Wolfgang Edward used has a Steinberger TransTrem on it instead of a Floyd Rose. The TransTrem is unique in that you can lock it into different positions and change keys. All of the strings stay in tune relative to each other. Another song that Edward used a TransTrem fitted guitar was "Get Up" from 5150. Sounds kind of like a slide, but it isn't.

Yes there was a Trans Trem on "Me Wise Magic." When Van-Halen.com had info on Ed's tour setup I think they mentioned that his Wolfgang Special with Sustainer did have the extra cutaway behind the floyd rose so he could do some pull-ups. If you watched MTV when they had Live from the 10 Spot you can actually see him pulling up on the bar. I do believe there was a DTuna on the guitar. So whoever did the extra route for Ed came up with somthing for the Dtuna spacing.

You must be talking about "Fire In The Hole" not "Year To The Day"

He also is going to need a stabilizer of some sort too...like a Tremsetter. Because it is impossible for you to use a DTuna on a floater without something to stablize it.

Doesn't he just switch guitars after he's finished with the transtrem? I don't think you can use a transtrem with a stabilizer, because it defeats the purpose of the transtrem. It has to be able to easily roll backwards and forwards, and a stabilizer holds the bridge too rigidly.

Actually, on the 10 spot concert, what you're seeing Eddie do is adjust the sustainer with a knob that's installed on the guitar. He's not pulling up on the bar. The sustainer system has some sort of feed back control unit I believe. That's how he's getting that squealing sound as he goes from the clean chorus part of Year to the Day into the verse.

I believe it is called a Fernandes Sustainer if I'm not mistaken.

Your right Tribb, you can't use a stabilizer with a TransTrem. I was referring what was said about Edward having his guitar routed so he could do pull ups on the bar. I was just saying that to have a DTuna in that situation that you'd have to use a stabilizer.

japes right....ive used the fernandes sustainer before....it has a switch that allows you to just bring out the harmonic on sustained notes,as well as normal and feedback modes....on the ten spot all eddies doing is using the harmonic switch and bending the string up and vibratoing it...

So is that the same device on his Striped Wolfgang Special? It's located near where the strap button is. I've seen it in pictures and wondered what it was...

I'm sorry, I'm just not satisfied with some of the explanations here. A switch only activates the sustainer, but on the 10 spot you never actually see him doing the notes that pull do you? The guitar is a Wolf with no route done for a Stein. The notes are pulled to smooth for a switch or with vibrato from the fingers. Help!
