For those curious about the EVH pickup, here it is.

There are a few things that are noteworthy about this clip, in my opinion:

A) I'm better than him

B) The overdriven poweramp of the Plexi may have more to do with the tone than the EVH pickup

C) if it *is* the EVH pickup that is the difference maker, let that be a lesson to all who worship medium output & high output pickups, including my foolish self.

I'm concerned enough about switching to a Duncan Custom Custom, let alone a Duncan EVH, which has a little more than half the output.

Chris (gnugear) is a cool cat. His Plexi RI is a 50 watter that's been modded, most notably with an OEI Transformer. He's about as close as I've heard to that tone.

I think the biggest factors in him getting that close are:
The Pickup
The Mods
The G12H30 Speakers
He switched from a Powerbrake to a Hotplate

You can hear some of the older mp3's on his site wear he's using the amp stock with a powerbrake into 4 V30's, and well, it sounds like a really harsh raspy Marshall.

I hope so

I'd say so cause I have heard the YRGM tone from my guitars and they use the Custom TB-5.

C) if it *is* the EVH pickup that is the difference maker, let that be a lesson to all who worship medium output & high output pickups, including my foolish self.

I don't think so, we will never know but I'd bet $$ to donuts EVH did not rewind a Gibson PAF to get more gain out of it by making it a low output pickup, now I understand this is Duncans so called version of what they think Eds pickup was but really all pickups we know for a fact that Ed designed the one in the EBMM and the one in the Wolf are med high output and so is the one he supposedly worked on the Custom Custom TB-11 and I do think he did and it was close to done imo.

I'm concerned enough about switching to a Duncan Custom Custom, let alone a Duncan EVH, which has a little more than half the output.

well really listen to those clips, the only thing that sounds good is the beginning of YRGM, Meanstreet sounds awful, has no one noticed this ?? I can get a better tone from a tube 10.my opinion of coarse.

Not bad... I'm sure it had something to do with the way in which it was recorded, but it just sounds kinda thin to me, especially on the "Mean Streets" part.

Not to be a dick or anything, but gnugear is just a cool dude who is a VH freak like the rest of us. So for those among us that can:

A) play better or
B) get that tone from a tube 10 (whatever that is)

I say, put up or shut up.

Dude, relax already. I'm sure he's a great guy, and he's a decent player, but in a discussion on an internet message board with a bunch of guitarists for crissakes, where something he's recorded is being held up as an example of something as inherently controversial as Edward Van Halen's tone, do you really expect it to be immune from critique? C'mon man, think about it, if he wasn't your little brother or whatever, just some guy you'd never heard of, you honestly mean to tell me you wouldn't put your two cents in?

Exactly...

okay, this guy is displaying a sound that is supposed to be the EVH early tone, I'm sure he is a cool dude and I said nothing against him personally, but one more time listen to Meanstreet
the tone is awfull, and a Tube 10 is a 10 watt tube amp that Musicyo sells for $120 and yes I can make Meanstreet sound that bad on it.
As I said the YRGM was decent but you can hear just how off that tone is on single notes, it's thin and lacks any kind of sizzle . sorry to upset you but IMO it missed the mark

I'm far from upset. I just thought it uncool that the first thing said was "I'm better than him". As Ed would say, lose the 'tude!

Not to mention the fact that he didn't post that here himself, so he didn't get to explain himself at all...details such as the fact that he's using a short-scale strat with a rosewood board, if memory serves. Not exactly the ideal "tonal recipe" to acheive the brown.

Also, since he's not here to explain, I will mention that his EVH pickup was defective and returned for repair. I'm not sure if this clip was before or after the repair. (Frankly, I kinda liked the "before" sound a little better when he first posted it!)

If somebody came in bragging that they "nailed it" - then yeah, critique all you want. But that's not the case here. So I said put up or shut up. Did anybody put up? No, just more yappin'

So I'll lead by example, I guess...

There ya go! See... you're "better than him", too! LOL

Actually, your tone's better, too. What pickups are YOU using? lol

Sorry man, just trying to lighten you up a bit, you're taking this waaaaay too personally.

I still stand by my statements that Chris is damn close to the tone on VHI. BTW he's going for VHI not Fair Warning, that's why Mean Street's not really there. But if you listen the amp's tone is there. Of course his technique isn't dead on Edward's, but who's is?
