I'd go for the 50 watter, but you won't sound like Zakk, even if you get a les paul with (((shudder))) EMG pickups.
Zakk claims that his heads are stock, but people who've had a look claim otherwise.

Zakk's gear is about as stock as Tribb's, and mine.

If you believe Ed's gear is stock, think again.

Zakk's "JCM 800s" are actually made by M&G Amplification. The only part that is a JCM 800 is the box.

Not to say that an 800 won't get you close, but the head's only one part of it.
Rhandy R. used a stock marshall head, with a les paul, but he used pedals as well, like the mxr dist.+.
Still, most of the sound came from his hands, just like Zakk.
Rhandy played in standard 440 tuning as well, while I've heard that Zakk is tuned down to a D, which is a much heavier sound.

First of all, if you don't already have one, get yourself a great guitar! Know what your looking for and get it! I've played a ton of Les Pauls, and all of them are different.

Second, TRY as many amps as you can. My buddy has a stock 800 that sounds fantastic, I've heard other 800's that sound just ok.

Third, once you have a base tone, build it from there. The Presence, Bass, Treble, and Middle controls on a amp do a lot, as I'm finding out with my new amp.

I would assume from my limited exposure to Zakks material that he's probably doing something similar to Ed with the heads into power amps then into a rack type of set up.
