Thread: EB 5150's ...

Picked these up 2 for 1's the other day. One pair of Ernie Ball 5150 Custom(NW). I like em', there not bad, now I've bought some once before and didn't likem'.

I noticed there nickel wound and they sound extra bright at first and then after a few songs they tend to fad a notch.

I wonder if that has anything to do with the "NW"? Anybody now anything bout the "wound" of a string? LOL ...

Top 3 strings NB uses, ...

    Dean Markley(BS) 9-42's
    EB 5150's custom's
    EB SS 10-42's

The 5150 strings are a pure nickel wire around a round core wire. Most modern strings (Boomers, slinkys, nickel rockers) are made with a hexagoganol core wire, which while reducing wrap wire slippage, loses a lot of contact with the wrap, resulting in less sustain. The pure nickel wrap differs for most other strings (Slinkies and Boomers again, I know for sure) which have a nickel plated steel wire. The 5150s are warmer to me. I prefer the 5150s, Boomers/Slinkys are too bright.

Also that was a pimpsmatic(*DIF) of a reply! Right on bro, ... I guess no one else had ever used 5150's?

I wonder if that nickel adds a little "kick" in the bround sound he has? A secret?

Well it's been a month and the 5150's still sound pretty damn bright and that's 1hr a day of playing on them.

I have used them for a LONG time, mainly because all my guitars have Kahler trems and 5150's are the only thing that seem to survive them. They seem to be getting hard to find around here (dallas area). but I think they were patterned after another string that I may have to try soon if I can't find them.

I also swear I saw ED's name on a new line of strings (peavey I would guess) or maybe I just dreamed it in a drunken stuper, who knows

I just picked up a set of Fenders for my Wolfgang. I know nothing about strings, but the guy working there (VH Freak & fellow Wolfgang/5150 owner) said he really likes the fenders. They are the nickle wound or whatever........as long as a string isn't broken, I'm happy!!!!!!!

I play my strings until you can't wipe the grit and shit off of them.........I kid you not!!!!!!!
