Trying to put together an economy model, first timer prototype, guy on a shoestring budget 5150 copy. Looks like the maple neck is going to be the most expensive part of this project. I did buy a cheap maple neck on ebay, but the headstock is completely wrong. The thinking is that I can dowel some more material on, and recut. Am I deluding myself?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

no you are not, I have made 5150 necks from paddle heads that I have had tp remove material on one side and biscuit joint it to the other to get enopugh material to make the bannana, it can be done, what I would do is find a Kramer Focus 1000 on ebay I have seen them go for as little as $150, they have floyds and decent tuners on them
just change the neck, and you'll have to live with a slanted pickup *or* fill the pickup cavity and reroute it oval and stright .

depends on how close you want it to be, that bananna on warmoth is the short fat stubby kind
but for a first timer or a cheapy it will work great

You guys are great! Thanks for the tips! Rol, I knew I should've come here first. There's a guy on ebay peddling some maple necks with a lot of material left on the bottom side, and I see what you're talking about with regard to just moving it to the top. Great idea - but like a chuckle-head, I bought one with a pseudo-Ibanez headstock (cheap cheap cheap!). Oh well, I'll have to find some scrap maple somewhere, but it's just really confidence inspiring to know that it CAN be done this way.

    THANKS!!!!!
