What should i buy. My amp I have now is a digital series crate amp it doesnt have enough gain. The amp more sounds like led zeppelin. So im looking for a new amp. So should I get a 5150 combo or stack? Or get a pedal for my crate?

oh yeah i also have distortion pedal but it s to powerfull. Should i get a line 6 podamp modeler for my crate ( to get the vh sound)or peaveys transtube dirty dog pedal which has metal distortion and overdrive on one pedal? I ve heard that eddie uses the combo and doesnt tweak it or anything. One more thing is it just me, but in van halen 3 the 5150 wasnt very high in gain. It seemed like it lost its edge for that album. But mabye he changed the sound because we al know eddie and he cant stay the same. Sorry bout all the writing im bored.

Are you gigging or are you a home player. If you seriously gigging and tone is a must, you can't beat a 5150 head with an older Marshal cab! This however causes a bit of a problem.
When I was gigging regularly I was a soundmans worst enemy cause to me a 5150 sounds like complete shit until you crank it up to around 6.5, then the tubes get cooking and you lose that bullshit buzz. The only problem with this is that on 6.5 the 5150 is vomit invoking loud, and it tend to fuck up stage mixes etc. I tried baffles, pointing the speaker at a wall etc. The only viable solution is a power brake. I've never used one but my buddy does and he claims that it works!
If your an occational gigger, get the combo, (I guess). It's a hell of a lot more practical, but I haven't used them, so ask someone who has.
Overall the 5150 stack is a great amp, but to make it sound good you have to have it real loud

I liked the 5150 combo, it's got a great tone. I still prefer my 5150 head and cab to it though. Homeunit speaks the truth on the volume problem though, those things have to be moving some massive air to sound great. I haven't tried the Power Brake thing yet either. I hope they are better than those old Tom Scholz Power Soaks, because they would blow that old Marshall output transformer pretty damn quick.

My buddy's been using his for at least 2 years, (steadily) and he reports no problems, but, you have to learn how to work your speakers cause your not really pushing them.
Just do what I used to do, the moment the soundman starts to beak off, tell him to fuck himself sideways. Just make sure you have a buddy in the audience so when the prick tries to cut you from the mix he's there to kick him in the nuts
After a while of that we got our own guy, but the standard club soundmen in my experience has universially been complete fuckwads! It's like what fucking band are you listening too idiot? Don't get me started!lol

Yeah I looked at the Peavey site and it weighs the same amount as the singer in my band!
