I just got Pro Audio 9.0 but I think it'll take me a while to learn it. I hope it's user friendly. Anyone got some suggestions on books, or sites that'll help me speed things along?

I think that Calkwalk has a PDF file at their site. http://www.cakewalk.com/ My experience is that CW is very user friendly, just play with it. Use a copy of something you don't mind losing, or record some bed tracks and have fun.

Did you get your soundcard configured alright?

I think so. It's a Soundblaster Live, with a MIDI jack. Honestly however, I'm kinda relying on my resident computer bud to handle the hardware. I have barely enough patience for just software.

Anything I should know in particular, to pass along to my guy?

My buddy uses Soundblaster Live, and he has had issue after issue with hardware/software compatability, but if it's working, don't worry about it.

So what do you plan to record with? I can't rememder, does the Soundblaster Live card have RCA jacks, Midi in, or 1/4" jacks?

See the reason I ask is I have all of the software CW/Cubase/Sound Forge etc but my system and card is shit and at the time I can't afford to build one. However I've built a few systems for some guys who run studios, and the sound cards they use are made by Yamaha and cost around $1200.

I know for a fact that the Soundblaster Live will work just fine, but I'm intrested in how you plan to get your music into your computer?

What do you want to be able to do?
What are the specs on you (computer) system?

If you answer these Q's I'll be able to help you out.
I've used CW software and it's great. Play with some midi files, you can mix and edit them without having to invest too much time.

My card has a MIDI in. So I'm thinking of running my DTX electric kit right into it, and the guitars through a MIDI out on a mixer. Then when it's in, I'll fiddle about with the sound. I not expecting to do more than high quality demos, and maybe some wicked mixed up various CD's. I guess once I start to mess with CW, I'll have a better idea of what I can do.

Oh yeah, I've got a 650mhz, 128 mg, 13.6 gig HD, burner, Soundblaster Live, woofer and stalites, plus 1/4" ins and outs. Again, it's new, so I'm still dicking with it.

Sounds like your system is perfect, (a little short on storage), but I think you will have a blast. The only problem is once you start and get into it, time speeds up and before you know it, 12 hours are gone
