No I wouldn't dare stripe it or anything, I'm just wondering what kind of pickups I could throw in there to get a better early VH tone.

Good God, I hate the thought of someone yanking out a perfectly good humbucker, but if you must, Eddie reportedly favored vintage PAF humbuckers in the early days. He did rewind them himself though, and remember what Ted Nugent said, he played through Ed's rig and still sounded like himself With Ed, 90% of it's in the fingers!

Not to worry man, this guitar was bought second hand and came with some fenders in them. I dont have the P-90's but hey I only payed $500 for it. What about these Dimarzio Super Distortions or Duncan Customs I've been reading about people slapping in their replicas?

Everyone over at the Duncan forums is flipping out over the Custom 5 (formerly Custom Custom Custom, when it was a $150 custom shop model) when placed in a Les Paul.

It's got the same coils as the Custom, and the Custom Custom, but with a warmer magnet than the Custom, and louder & tighter bass than the Custom Custom.

On Duncan's site, they suggest that it's like a "'59 with more output".

But the real key here, is that they seem to think that's it's the ultimate pickup for a Les Paul, as opposed to guitars with Strat bodies.

If their description isn't clear enough for you, just look at the description for the Custom Custom. If you put a Custom Custom in a Les Paul, most VH-geeks will tell you it's too fat & muddy. The switch in magnets (which is the only difference)supposedly fixes this in the Custom 5.

    Your mileage may vary............

Also, if you check the other thread I started in here, about the "Early Eddie" clip, you'll hear an example of the custom shop EVH pickup. It's low output, has an Alnico 2 magnet, and sounds somewhat like a Seth Lover, or Alnico Pro II, depending on whom you ask.

One of the guys on here tried it in an Alder guitar, and didn't think it had enough bottom. I bet it would sound ACE in a fat-*ss Les Paul......
