OK Folks,

I'm just curious to hear what everyone thinks about this.

I'm about ready to join up with a faily active cover band. I've only really played in original bands that never gigged more than once a month. I've heard that if you play in a cover band, you need to expect things to break....

So having said that, I'm thinking about picking up a new guitar. SO I can keep my American Strat, PRS and EBMM Axis at home. Here's what I'm looking for:

* before anything, it has to be versatile -- single coil sounds, humbucker sounds you name it.

* It has to be inexpensive - if it dies or gets stolen, I wont cry

* It can't look like an 80s CC Deville BC Rich nightmare - No flourescents here...I want something that wont look rediculous.

OK, so having said that...what would any of you guys do?

Here's some of the thoughts I had:

1) Fender Mexican Strat with new pickups and new tuning keys

2) Kramer Striker 200 buck striker from musicyo.com

3) If I can find one, a beat up Ernie Ball Sillouette -- but only if I can find one under 450 or so....

Any other thoughts?

-Frank

Strangegrey, I am of the same mindset as you. I used to use my EVH EBMM live all the time and I beat the crap out if it, so I retired it. Then I got my Wolfie Standard and that became my main guitar for everything, but I don't want to beat it up, so I went out a bought a couple old Kramers, and they have worked great.

I just recently got an '83 original Pat Pending Kramer Pacer, that basically looks like a Strat. It has two single coils and a Duncan in the bridge, with a Floyd Rose. The Duncan in there sucked, so I threw a Duncan JB in there. I hate single coils, but I kept the neck one in, and removed the center one. So far, seems very versatile and I got it for $250 and spent $50 to set it up and rewire it. It's in decent condition and if I beat it up, I certainly won't care. Just got a D-Tuna for it and will slap that on tonight. Can't beat the price and that way I can leave the Wolfie home some nights, although I usually use it anyway.

So just my two cents, for me, it's about getting the same feel on all my guitars, or at least similiar ones. And for me, the old Kramers work great and you can't beat the price for a quality guitar. Don't waste your money on one of those shitass Music Yo Kramers though.

In my experience, I've never found a guitar that did humbucker and single coil sounds really well. It was either better on the singles or better on the humbuckers. Have you thought about getting a Mexi Strat with some hardware upgrades or better yet a used Jap Strat for single coil tones, and a used Wolfgang Special for humbucker tones. Just my two pennies.

I'd score a used Wolfgang Special....not much cash, but decent
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

There was a dude selling a gold special on ebay, just a few days ago. He added a tone knob and a couple coil taps to it, bummer you missed out.

If your interested in a Special for under five, maybe we can work somethin out partner.

What about the Parker guitars? The P-38. Doesn't it have single coil w/ coil tap for humbucker on the bridge and a piezo?

How does this guitar stack up?

Any way you slice it, you really need at LEAST 2 guitars on stage. I would never play out without a backup right there behind me. I have a Mexican strat I use as a backup. It has Hotrail in the bridge, Single coil middle, & stacked humbucking in the neck. It's a GREAT guitar.. but my #1 is my PRS. I switch off as needed.
Plstrcast everywhere else, Smudge NYC here.. so kiss my arse!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/smudgenyc" target="_blank">http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/smudgenyc</a>

Actually,

I ultimately intend on buying two of these guitars....since I would be crazy to gig without the backup...

But, I still refuse to take out my american strat, my axis, or my prs to do weekly gigs in run down bars.

If I have to spend the same coin on two mexican strats as I would have on one american...I'll go with the taco variety...

The unfortunate thing, is that the Mexican strats aren't THAT cheap.

I'd probably be replacing the pups on the strats with good pickups....and then putting locking tuners on them.....

having said that, If the mexican strats are 350, then after all is said and done, I've spent 500 on each one.

Those musicyo kramers are looking nicer and nicer.....

The musicyo Kramers aren't as shitty as you might think. I've had one for about a year now, and for the money, they can't be beat. Pickups can be changed if you don't like the sound you get. The necks feel nice and the licensed Floyd works well. One word of caution, the Striker body is a thin body so you might not get the tone you want. They are definitely worth the money though. Mexican Strats aren't cheap and you're not getting a lot of guitar for the money. Even the Squiers are considerably more expensive than the new Kramers. I'd choose a new or used Wolf Special though. Unfortunately I'm a lefty, so I'm sticking with my new Kramer until a better option comes along.

I actually had 2 musicyo kramers about a year ago....I'll definitely agree with you on everything you said.

The reason that i got rid of them, is this:

one was a seven string...and I simply couldn't get comfortable with the low B, so I returned it on the 29th day.

The other was a fairly good red six string striker....however, the neck was a little warped, so I got rid of it....and decided to get an EBMM axis.

The one thing I've noticed with Musicyo, is that you have to scrutinize the guitars when the get delivered, because there are definitely some poor quality guitars in the bunch....but thats to be expected in any import guitar. The big difference here, is that you can't try them out in the store to weed out the duds....

But if you get a good one, they're great for the money!

Frank,
If you want a versatile guitar, look no further than the Ernie Ball/Music Man Steve Morse model. 4, yes 4 pickups, 2 singles, 2 hums, and 11 different pickup combinations. "...There's a little Van Halen in everybody..."
