Not that it matters too much... But I stopped in MARS today for a set of strings and they are having a giant going out of business sale. The dude in the store told me the whole corporation bit the dust... not just that store!

No big loss... MARS was one giant supermarket of crap anyway. I've always found a better selection of quality gear in stores a fraction of their size.

If you were in the market for a $350 Stratpack though, MARS was the place for you, they had an entire floor full of them!

from what i've seen elsewhere...the guy that started Mars also started Office Depot, and figured the musical instrument market was underserved. thing is, the MI market isn't as big as the consumer electronics, sporting goods, ofice supply, or even pet supply markets. probably bit off more than they could chew, expanding too fast, etc...

I don't know where you guys are, but Mars in Dallas has always been cheapest on pickups, volume and tone pots, and effect peddles. Compared to Guitar Center, they had much better pricing. The one or two mom-and-pop owned stores in the area couldn't even compete with the selection or pricing. Now if I was willing to spend some money in gas, I could go to a smaller store, but the cost would still be made up in time and gas to get there! Supermarket or not, I'm not going to pay extra for something just to keep "the Man" from making a dime (and he seems to be losing that dime as we speak!). Fuck that... I have better things to do with my cash

MARS was nice when it first came out, but it went way down hill from there. Or maybe it was the initial shock of all that guitar stuff in the same building, who knows.

I wouldn't mind it if Guitar Center went in the same direction.

I was always under the impression that MARS specialized in Korean bullshit guitars like ESP LTD's. That was all they ever seemed to have! They had a few custom shop guitars but they never ever sold them. You could basically go there once a year and still see the same decent guitars hanging there. The only stock that ever changed were the shit ones.
They did, however, have really good effects and pickups section. They always had a huge supply of SD's, Dimarzios, and EMG's.
The one cool thing about that store was that all the amps were plugged in and you could just grab an axe off of the wall and wail the shit out of it and nobody cared!

Oh Well...

I don't mean to keep defending Mars, but they had an awesome selection of Gibson and Fender guitars. They also carried some of the lower end stuff like Epiphone and Squier, but youy could find whatever pricerange you were suited for without much of a problem... And the salers people didn't have their thumbs up their asses like Guitar Shitter.
