hey guys, how do i know what key i am playing in? i am playing a neil young song(mother earth) with a teacher of mine for a neil tribute cd she got hooked up with through her radio station. we rehearsed it for the first time yesterday and she was playing bass and myself on guitar. she asked what key i was playing in and i didnt know. she said she was in D. the chords are just regular neil chords(C, G, Em, D). would i have to use a capo in order to be playing in D? any help is appreciated, thanks!

with the D being major, looks like G to me.

Which chord do you start on?

If the song is in G, then you would need to capo the 7th fret to play it exactly the same in D.

well there is an intro that starts on G.....where the lyrics come in, the first chord is also G. Also, do you know of any website where i could find a chart or listing of the relationships between chords and the key it is in and how to get to certain keys using capos and that sort of thing?

I don't know of any right off, but I'm sure there is somewhere. But for your song, the chords would change like this:

    G would be D

    Em would be Bm

    C would be G

    D would be A

Those are all easy chords, except the bm is a bit tough if you are not used to using barre chords.

www.wholenote.com is a great place to start

One thing that you might find interesting is the section on moving chords to barre form.

    With the cord you've given it's G.

Em is the sixth, which is a minor chord in the key of G.

That's the best I can do with what info I have.
