I was wondering about the beginning riff to "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC. Is this a difficult riff to play with the speed at which it needs to be played. It seems like Angus has to really concentrate during the beginning of this song. I've noticed this while watching a couple of AC/DC's live DVD's and both times at the beginning of Thunderstruck Angus does not move around furiously, like he normally does, and he seems to be paying close attention to his playing. For anyone that can give me some insight it would be much appreciated.

It's just some hammer-ons, it's not hard. He hammers the B string 4th and 7th frets, and then the 5th and the 8th, then I think he moves down to 10th and 12th fret for a bar or so...it's easy, my explanation was just lousy.

It's not that hard, just a matter of getting the feel and timing of it... kinda like "Hot For Teacher" in a way. YOU GOT IT!!!

Thanks for the insight guys. I'm not a guitar player, I was just wondering about the riff. I must say that your answer is unexpected. I don't understand why Angus seems to be concentrating so much, and yet you guys say the riff is fairly easy. Oh well, Angus is getting close to 50 years old, maybe his body is slowing down a little bit. He still kicks ass though IMO.

My buddy was at a show where Angus fucked that opening riff all up. He had to start over....even the best screw up.....speaking of...

On the "3" tour, I must have seen Ed get unplugged like 3 times. Man he feels a big whole with his axe....I think it was the Phily show during Ain't Talkin' Bout Love, he couldn't get it plugged back in.....he looked really flustered....very funny to see Ed trying to find the plug on his cord and his "tech" running out to help....

Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

To me, the riff is not hard to play, but there's a lot going into making it sound good. Timing is everything witht that riff, and also, you have to mute the other five strings while playing it. So the riff is not hard, but making it sound right takes a little work.

So, what I understand from what you guys have said is that the riff is not very difficult, but it does take some concentration to get the timing right. That would explain why Angus seemed to be concentrating during that part on the DVD's that I have. Like Jimmy said even the best screw up sometimes. Although I must admit I can't remember a time where Eddie screwed up during the 6 or VH concerts that I have been to. Maybe I will get the chance to see him screw up at least one more time, then again maybe I won't.
