This buddy of mine does a technique that produces a high pitched sound when bending the string at the fret and touching the string with his pick hand thumb. Is this what is called a pinched harmonic? Does anybody have a better explanation. It sounds really cool.

    hes hitting the string with the edge of his pick then right after the edge of his thumb is "pinching" it or rather lightly muting it producing a falsae harmonic.

    Thanks for the info guys

    So basically its a two part technique. You pick the string as normal then right after the edge of the thumb pinches it. Or you don't pick the string like you normally would but hit with edge of the pick you say then the thumb . I'm not trying to beat a dead horse I just want get it right! It sounds cool and Ed does it!

    Thanks

    </font>
I just did it! The pick must be barely sticking out between the thumb so when you pick there is immediate contact with the edge of the thumb. Almost at the same time. pick - thumb striking at the same time. sounds like Ed! Well almost

    Yeah it's kinda hard to explain, like Rick said, you have to pinch the string sorta between your thumb and the pick. If you're gonna play VH, it's an essential technique. Shit it's an essential rock technique anyway. That's how Eddie gets those screaming squeals.

    exactly. in fact when i play i use the long edge of the pick and have just a smidge sticking out of the edge of my thumb. so ass you down pick just dig into the string and you ll get the "pinch".

    I really suck on the guitar.......but man.....I can fuckin' squeal like a pig.

    I've got a good technique for squeals......I love do one while I'm in drop-D........it sounds like Zakk!!!!!

    BTW......the only song I can play is "When I Come Around" by Green Day...........maybe I spend too much time squealing!!!!
    Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

    Check out the pinches on the intro of "I'm the one"... That should help get you started. Keep it in the key of A for simplicity (after you tune down...)
