Friends,

Ed had a favorite Kramer, he had a favorite Music Man. Does he have a favorite Wolfgang. Is there one that he records everything with. If so, which one is it, and why?

thanks, and have good tone.
You know the best tone I ever had was with that little bandmaster cranked to 10. Edward Van Halen, 1980, Guitar Player Magazine.

I truely believe that in the studio, Ed uses everything, Wolfs/EVHMM/Stats/Pauls whatever he wants.

On the road he uses one main axe. He has said in the past that this keeps his tone consistant, which is horseshit. He's just like the rest of us, he finds one he likes, and sticks with it.

In theory, he should be able to play any Wolf and get the same feel/response etc. This is also horseshit, especially with the Wolfs. They're a production line guitar and not put under the same scrutiny that the EVHMM were. I've played over a dozen Wolf Standards and none of them played like the others.

Besides, I'm sure Ed has his own way of setting up and dynamically using his instuments, so when he finds one that works for him, the search stops

From what I saw on the 3 tour(correct me if I'm wrong folks), his main axe was a Tobacco Sunburst Standard. It's in many pictures from the tour. He had a White Special with a Transtrem and Sustainer that was used on "Fire In The Hole" and "Year To The Day". I've seen a Purple Standard in some pictures, and he started playing a striped Special in Las Vegas and through the last month of the tour. He was photographed in the October 99 Guitar World with the striped Special.

And the "Without You" video was the only public sighting of the "mysterious" P90 Wolf Special...

On Year To The Day, I thought his transtrem special was a tobacco suburst. I know it was from the May 24th show and his main Wolfgang was blue or purple. He used the white one on FITH though. I looked a lot thicker and much uglier. He should stick to the EBMM I think. Looks better to me.

in concert on "year to the day" he used a special shaped body with a quilted maple top(tobacco sunburst),a floyd rose trem,a humbucker in the bridge one volume pot,and a fernandez sustainer system in the neck pocket, and a wolf standard neck.
