Can someone explain some differences? I'm very interested in getting one due to the buzz on these forums, but I need to know what I'm getting for my money. I'll be off soon to my local music shop to play both.

Play both and you'll tell the differences. The USA Standard and Special are fine guitars.

Standard has arched top / Not on Special
Standard has birdseye maple neck / Hard maple on Special
Standard has angle headstock / Not on Special
Standard has tone control / Not on Special

That's all I can think of.

Written, the best answer to your question is found at the Peavey site.

This is such an old topic though, you can probally lookup some old threads and get more answers.

Thanks, I played both yesterday. The only big diff to me was the birdseye vs. hard maple neck. I like the Standard's birdeye much better, but the special's maple was still played very well. I love the oil finish, it feels so nice. I only wonder if that neck finish wouldn't dirty quickly?
Anyways, I'll probably go for the Special.

If you think the oil finish feels nice, wait a few months, and it will get better as you polish it while playing.
My neck stays clean on mine, no problem. I oil it with lemon oil once week or evey other week, and it's as smooth as a baby's butt.
It only gets better with time.
I have a Standard, but both guitars feel and sound great.
    Your choice.

One problem, can you get a special with those nice quilt finishes, or is that standard only? Im not quite worried about arch top vs. flat top because im used to LP bodies anyway. They still feel fine on my waist.

You can get a Quilt-Top on a Special, but it will be made in Korea, not America.
The Wolfgang does have a Flame-Top Special that looks really nice and is American.

About the neck. If you make sure your hands are clean, and wipe down the neck with lemon oil about every 4 weeks, you shouldn't have too much of a problem keeping it clean. Make sure there is no yellow coloring in the lemon oil you choose.
If the neck does get dirty don't panic, just use some Murphy's Oil Soap on it.

The other thing about the neck is that you don't want to expose it to any extremes in temperature or humidity. Keep her in the case when not playing it.
