good question!

1984 had some killer shit in it, he threw in a slew of blues in there.

the lwan solo is aweomse as we all know

and his solo on the III tour was fucking great. he just shredded! his added wah pedal to cathedral was cool. and the way he broke up eruption was bad ass too

Good topic... Like most people here I'm a huge eddie nut and back in the days of napster liked to collect live unaccompanied ed solos.

After hearing a few I'm of the opinion that the RHRN 316 solo is just so-so. I downloaded a clip called Eddie Van Halen solo (rage).mp3 and on this one ed is absolutely inspired. If I had to guess I think its probably from the 1984 era.

Ed's playing on here is sublime. He does an insane take and extension of the mean streets intro with strange never before heard tapping stuff. Also the band kicks in for a short while and ed does an excerpt of cream's Sitting on Top of the World. This is where, like the previous poster said, Ed throws in some mind-boggling liquid blues .

Highly recomended if you can track it down.

The only live solos I've heard were for LWAN, Balance, and some foreign tour back in the late 70s where he was absolutely HIGHER THAN A KITE.

My fav is the LWAN solo. My favorite parts of the solo are probably the extended Mean Street hammer-on part, including the "happy part", and the short period where he taps the 'Beat-It' evil tap interval, which almost sounds "picked". It goes by before you know it.

    Ed rules.

I have the US Festival concert on video and his solo in that was great. And I went to the VH3 concert and I thought that his solo in that was pretty damn good. I thought he was actaully starting to get a better guitar sound than the whole sammy era with the exception of 5150 tour.

LWAN is just too cool! I also dug the III solo with the sustainer stuff.

Considering how good LWAN was, I remember reading an interview where he said it was only an average performance!!!!

I'm going to go with the 82 tour ( Although a little later,I consider the US festival the same tour) He played everything in that solo. I do like the LWAN solo, but he doesn't play little guitars or the real intro to meanstreet.
