I was reading the recent thread about the most difficult VH songs to pull off, and it started me thinking. Years ago I learned probably about 70-80% of the VH catalog (LOTS of work), and one thing that really helped was listening to live stuff, including LWAN... you know, getting a feel not just for playing specific licks, but for Ed's STYLE - how he transitions between parts and licks, what he plays where, all that stuff.
That said, one thing that I have never, never ever even come close to being able to pull off is the part in his LWAN solo where he does the Mean Street intro - then goes NUTS with it! All the two string and two finger tapping, mixed with percussive tapping and harmonics, Jeesus! I don't even have a clue where to start!... Any thoughts?

Yeah getting to that Mean Street Intro. Has anyone ever heard of any other musician being able to play it, i've always wondered that or is it just one of Ed's imposibles?

CHECK OUT "THEATOMICPUNKS.COM", GO TO THE AUDIO SECTION AND DOWNLOAD SOME OF THEIR LIVE SONGS. YOU WILL BE VERY IMPRESSED. BRIAN YOUNG (WHO IS NOW ON TOUR WITH DLR WAS THE OLD GUITARIST FOR THIS BAND) HE CAN TEAR IT UP! HE IS VERY TALENTED.

I've heard of others play it (and come pretty damn close), such as Atomic Punks alumni Bart Walsh and Brian Young, and a few guys on the former VHML. Yet when they play the Mean Street intro, there's still something "missing": that unique Eddie phrasing. No one's nailed it 100% yet, IMHO.

BTW, I think the part of the LWAN solo where Ed goes bananas with the two-finger tapping and the harmonics is EASIER than the "by-the-album" slapping and tapping part (not that I can play it perfectly or anything ).

I'd say check out the tab book or the album. He always seems to play bits and pieces from other songs or parts that sound like! I hear some of the "JUDGEMENT DAY" tapping in there as well as the "MEAN STREET" slap/tapping! Check out the tab and get ready to sit with your cd player at the ready!!!!!

I'd say the two-fingered tapping part of "Judgement Day" probably has its roots more in the part of his 1984 tour solo (the "table-top" part) than "Mean Street."
Nevertheless, he DOES love to pull out the kitchen sink from time to time.......ain't it great?
