Index finger. And I usually push down & away rather than up.
I really never tap when I play live though.

    Index for me.

It's funny I'll listen to tapes I made of myselft from like 5 years ago and I could "tap" better back then. It's one of those technique things rather than pure skill, and once you slack on practicing, it's gone.

BTW Jape Man, congratulations on your "big show" and the "big receptive crowds."

A couple of weeks ago, my buddy and I finished our blazing set and walked outside of the barn we were playing in. There stood two 12-year olds riding skateboards checking out the tunes.

They asked us if we knew any Insane Clown Possee. We asked them if they knew any Van Halen. It's safe to say the answer was no to both questions.

Thanks Jimmy. I'm hoping that something happens soon with my band. We have a huge radio/record promoter flying in to see us next week. This guy got Creed their deal, as well as almost all the "baby bands" you hear on the radio today. I hope we're next!!!

I tap with my index finger and hold the pick in the 2 knukle joints of my middle finger.

I tap upwards though. Just the way someone showed me, you know.....

I tap with my middle and ring finger, so I can hold the pick while I'm doing it and move back and forth quickly. When I started tapping I never watched Ed do it properly and just learnt that way. It's natural now.

It's funny how when you learn something, it just becomes second nature. Example: my pick goes right up under my middle and ring fingers and is held in my hand when I tap with my index finger. If I tried to explain this to someone who's never done it, it would be very unnatural for them. But, now, it's something I never think about. The pick just goes up there and returns to my thumb and index finger when it's time to pick again.

Jape, I know what you mean. I found it easier to just hold the pick normally and tap with my other fingers. When I started learning bar chords a long time ago, I used to hook my thumb over the top of the neck to cover the E string. After doing it like that for a couple of years I realized that it wasn't the best way to play a bar chord, so I had to reteach myself to use the first finger for the entire bar. Funny, I don't think I've used a bar chord in 15 years..lol

The funny thing for me, being primarily a bassist, is that I can tap like a mother with both the index, middle, and even ring finger on a guitar, but as soon as a pick is introduced, I'm in a heap of trouble...

Maybe that's why I'm always finger-picking the guitar, even if it's electric.

I use my index. I changed to holding the pick with my middle/thumb to accomadate tapping and it has stuck ever since.
