Some of you may have seen this already.
Does EVH really get his tone from 5150's?

I've noticed when I turn my volume up it kills the tone. But isn't possible to achieve the "good" tone by just miking the amp to the PA and cranking the PA while the amp is at a lower volume. If I'm sounding like an amateur I'll shut up now. But seriously can tolerable tone be acheived by trying it this way. EJ what do say to that?

Why the original poster is full of shit:

Early 2000?

6 5150 combos. No sir that's from the balance tour. The only thing on stage on the III tour were 3 5150 cabs. 2 striped, 1 yellow.

And finally, you guys know how much I like my 5150 although I own other amps including an old Marshall, so I think I have a good grasp on what a 5150 sounds like and what an old Marshall sounds like. I was at the Atlanta show on the III tour and have countless bootlegs from the tour. There was no Marshall tone on anything I've heard. When I first started getting bootlegs of the old tunes that they did on that tour, I remember wishing Ed would've used a Marshall onstage for those songs because they would've worked better for the tunes.

Like I said, I really like the 5150 high gain sound, but this whole speculation about hidden amps on the III tour can be summed up by the fact that Ed's tone on the III tour was nothing to write home about. It was just a decent 5150 sound. I like his 5150 sound better with his FUCK/Balance effects. The amp takes to that processed sound nicely.

Yes it is true that Ed did use marshalls on the Balance tour only for the clean channel, there was no hidding on ed's behalf there. And yes Sammy did play guitar on that tour, I saw a bit of runnin with the devil on the toronto PPV broadcast and he was playing as well.

I actually liked his tone on the 3 tour. Mind you, I've only got one bottleg to go by from an Australian show.

However, that's not the Marshall's tone on my bootleg.

But this guy seems to have all of his info wrong. The way he said late 1999 first, and then corrected it to early 2000.

Maybe I'm being a bit over cynical, but how can you get 1998 mixed up with the year 2000 ?

Lol to the Hagar quote...

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Ed use 5150's on the 3 tour and everything else, he'd been playing through the Marshall head? Is this true? Cause my point is, you know we talk about how bad Ed's tone was on the 3 tour and we've never really come up with something that he did differently. That being said, if it was the first time he'd been with the Marshall wouldn't that explain for his bad sound? Anyways, I'm shooting in the dark here, help me out guys.

he got rig of his rack and started playing those god aweful wolfgangs Whatever is was it was truly horrendous IMO. Maybe it was no bottom and cranked mids?

I heard that Ed used 800s on the Balance tour but someone was saying that was Sams gear. From what I understand Sam didn't play electric on the Balance tour but I don't know that for sure.

Ed used the 5150II on the VH3 tour and not the original 5150's. Maybe that's the difference? I don't think it's the Wolfgangs, cause he used them from time to time on the Balance tour and they sounded fine then. They also sounded good on CGTSNM and Me Wise Magic.

I beleive he only used the Wolfgang on "Not Enough".

Something tells me he may have used it on "Can't Stop Lovin' You".......you know it had a Piezo pickup or something for the accoustic sound.....No?????.......something like that.

He used the Wolfgangs for the two Roth tracks on the Best Of collection and both of those songs sound damn good to me. Then again, he had a real producer in the studio.

I still say that the questionable tone on the VH3 tour had to do with the 5150II's and not the Wolfgangs. Plus the whole production scale was lower in support of VH3.

I liked the "dryness" on the "3" tour......but it was just so harsh.

Lots of mids just screamin' at you.
