OK, so I'm replacing the neck pick-up on one of my guitars. I unscrew the thingy that holds the pick-up in place and out it pops. Then I go to disconnect the wire thingy that goes off to the selector switch. And then I realise I haven't got a feckin clue what the hell I'm doing. This wire goes right inside the pick-up and i haven't a clue how to get it out, let alone connect a new pick-up.

Can anyone give me advice on how you go about changing pick-ups - websites, messages on this board, anything, before I either electrocute myself or do serious and long lasting damage to a really cheap budget guitar.

I am a moron when it comes to electronics, but there you go. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wish I could give you better advice, but my best advice would be to take it to a guitar shop

Guitar electronics are usually quite simple, but in this case, some more info would help:

1)humbucker w/2 wires?
or
2)humbucker w/4 wires and shielding?
or
3)single coil?

4)pickguard or not?

5)when you say the wire goes into the pickup, do you mean a single strand of copper, or a complete insulated wire?

Anything more you can give will help; it's really not too complicated!

Its a humbucker with a single wire into the casing. The wire is insulated all the way into the casing. At the pick-up selector switch end of things where the wire re-emerges after going into the body, this single red wire then splits into one little white wire and one group of thin metal wires which are soldered into the selector contacts.

I read somewhere since I posted the first message that you unsolder the wire at the pick-up selector end, and that when you purchase a new pick-up, a wire is provided, already installed into the pick-up, ready to solder into the selector switch contacts. Am I along the right lines?

Your description is still a little tough to understand, but I'll give it a try.

The wire coming from the pickup shouldn't be tampered with at the pickup end. The other end, where it attaches to the switch, is the 'business end'. If ONE wire comes from the pickup, then it is a 2 conductor wire; the white wire is the 'hot' wire and should be connected to the pickup switch, and the bare wire is the 'ground' wire and should be soldered to the back of the volume pot.

Remember, you have no need to fiddle with the wire on the pickup end; it it already attached inside the pickup to where it needs to go.
