You'll probably think I'm a moron for this and I'm sorry if you do butt, would a bass blow out a 40 watt normal guitar amp if you played the bass with the guitar amp? Bring on the insults...

It's not a dumb question at all. While a guitar amp is not the best choice for bass, it CAN be used, but with caution. If you turn the amp up loud, you can easily fry the speaker, because it's not meant to handle those low frequencies, nor is it meant for the sometimes extreme transient peaks that a bass can have.

But, if you have NO other alternative, keep the bass control set low, and the volume set fairly low, and try not to whack the notes too hard. (a compressor would help with that, but I'm assuming there isn't one involved in the chain here)

If you are playing with a band, a 40 watt guitar amp isn't a very good idea. If you're in a pinch though, get the thing up as high as you can off the floor (more toward ear level) and keep the volume and bass LOW.

Hope this helps!

The first guitar I played thru my amp (Crate GX15R) was a bass. But that's because it's what the guy at the pawn shop handed me. It sounded a little funny, but it's still worked just fine.

I don't think it's a dumb question either Sleepless. A guitar amps circuitry, especially if it's solid state is different than a bass amps circuitry, and is more likely to be damaged than if the amp were tube driven. There are low punch frequencies coming from a bass that can affect and damage componenets in a guitar amp even when it's not turned up loud, but it depends on how hard you whack the deep bass notes. For instance, a 50 watt marshall tube amp woudn't be as susceptible to damage from a bass as a 50 watt solid state marshall even though they're the same make.
When your in a pinch though, what can you do?

If I get a bass then, I think I'll just get a cheap 20 watt bass amp. I don't want to take the chance of blowing out my amp, I really love how it sounds. It's a 40 watt DOD amp w/ grind distortion I got at a pawn shop.
