hey guys im going to spend around 550 (maybe 600 at the most)for a new combo amp since me and my freinds are starting a garage band for jamming fun and such...im really liking the peavey ultra 112..its fits into my price range and seems to have enough power(60 watts)and has got alot of good reveiws on harmony central..ive played one at the store too and liked it...but if you have any other suggestions for amps in this price range let me know..mesa? marshall? ect...i cant buy off of ebay cause ill be finacing this in payments just to let you know....we ll be playing vh of course at my request but since this is a fun ,democratic jam band ill also be playing korn, sabbath, ect. but getting a good vh distortion is still the most important

btw, Mesa stuff is the best period. But the price for them is nuts.

My buddy works at a music store and he said he was surprised at how good the new marshal combos sound, but I think they're a bit pricey.

Side note, my buddy just picked a slightly modded jcm 800 for $200. Canadian, and man does it ever sound good, the lucky bastard!

HomeUnit's right. The mesa rectifier series are a great amp, but BIG bucks. It doesn't sound like you have that kind of money to spend. What kind of guitar will you be using and what kind of music are you going for(besides VH).

You should be able to find a nice 70s era Marshall JMP 2x12 in that price range.

How about this, I just bought one, it's on the way. Skip the 1x12 and get the 410.

Greatest price I ever saw.

Your pretty well running the pickup gauntlet with those guitars. There's a lot of variation from guitar to guitar. If you can't afford a high end boogie I'd follow Jape Man's advise and see about a marshall combo with a 2x12. There's a lot of punch for the money in those amps, and they're tough versatile units. That'll be in your price range, there's still a few out there, and if you decide to use a pedal for gain boost or other effects the combo's work well with them. Another good thing about the marshall combo is that it's not a 1 trick pony. Each of those guitars will have it's own sound through it. If you find a good gain(not distortion) pedal you'll be able to get the high gain sounds you like at lower volumes.

The 800 series models are basically like the 78 marshall heads, same sound, same kind of circuitry. Good bottom end. I had 3 800 series combo's at one time and I loved them, but had to use a pedal for more gain when I couldn't crank the amp.
I'd really take Jape Man's advise and go for a 2x12 combo if your mind's made up to get a marshall.
What ever you decide Rick, if you can, cruise around and try a few different types of amps out before you empty your pockets. When you haven't tried a particular amp out and you buy one off ebay you don't really know if it's the sound you want. There must be a music store in your area you can check out try a few different amps. Bring one of your own guitars to try it, and don't let a salesman bullshit you or talk you into anything. Let your ears decide.

what Tribb said.

The only thing I would add is about the 800s. The 50watt just don't have it, Not enough balls. The 100s are great, albeit not very vesitile.
A 100 watt 800 with a tube screamer will give you enough gain to play anything. The thing with the 800s are they're hard to play. They feel like you never have enough gain. I always used to think they were shit until I tracked some stuff with one. While I was tracking I was thinking "this sucks it's got no balls" but when I heard the play back I went out and bought one and played it for five years.
I'd try the Marshal combo, then a flextone combo for sure. Like tribb said try everything, cause then you'll know what your looking for, and know were you want to head when you get more cash

One amp that hasn't been mentioned and should be is the Line 6 Flextone. A 100 watt flextone with 2x12's will amaze most players. It's loud, and will do an amazing imitation of a modded marshall, boogie, 5150, fender etc..
Go to www.line6.com
and check them out. Homeunit can tell you a lot more about them than I can.
It doesn't have to have tubes to kick ass.
