i am new here but ive been playing for years, and i finally decided to register on this board after reading it everyday for quite a while. Anyway, i know the setup he had, etc....and that most of the tone comes from the hands, but i would like to know if anyone here has any knowledge of a good way to get the tone from VH I without modding the amp or getting a 5150 head i have a Marshall JCM 2000 and a les paul custom and a custom made "Eddie guitar" maybe there is a pedal i can use or an eq, just a basic question i dont wanna buy all new gear, just wondering if anyone knows of a pedal etc that might do the trick easy. thanks in advance

Well, you can forget about doin' the trick easy. But you can come pretty close with a low gain tube amp and a bridge humbucker, a mxr phaser and a delay. If you wanna come closer there's a few thousand details to disagree about. But Seymour Duncan's EVH custom shop pick up should get you in VH1 heaven fairly affordable.

I used to get really close w/ an American Standard Strat w/ a bridge JB humbucker, and Fender '59 Bassman RI cranked WAY up, a Phase 90, and a DOD delay pedal.

You can get it on the DSL100 on the Classic Gain channel (the green LED one), have quite a bit of reverb on make sure you have some power tune saturation going, you aren't gonna really get that sound at bedroom levels.

You may find an overdrive pedal set to boost the input a little hotter may help (a boss super overdrive, or dod yjm308), a MXR phase 90 is a must for the solos and a delay will also serve you well.

90% of the sound is the notes, get them right with the right phrasing and you are on the way.

Eddie would sound like Eddie through your gear. The DSL100 on the vintage gain channel will get you closer to the VH1 tone than a 5150 will. Percivere, it will come.

I swear to you all I have is a phase 90 resissue (not the new striped one) and I play my Ibanez RG thru a AVT 20 Marshall and my sound is pretty brown
"Well, he's an intelligent, well-read guy. But it's like he can't connect the dots somehow." (EVH Guitar World, March 1998).

GP: "Did you use a pick for "Spanish Fly"?

EVH: "Yeah, except for the part near the end that sounds like Montoya or something."
