I was at Fry's Electronics buying a microwave last weekend and as I walked past the DVD section I saw this kid playing the fuck out of his guitar on the TV monitor.

I asked one of the sales guys who that was and they said John Mayer. I bought his DVD concert and the guy fucking rocks! He plays SRV's "Lenny" "Message in the Bottle" besides his own material.

I just happened to catch Mayer play a tune on the Grammy's too.

This guy rocks! Check 'em out.

SRV is a huge Mayer influence, but I haven't seen him playing anything from him yet. I'll have to check it out. Thanks

Hey Guys,
First time poster here. Been reading the site for quite a while though. Like all of you, I'm huge VH fan (DLR era is my fav, but love it all). That's why I'm finding it odd (as I'm sure you do) that I'm using my first post to give props to John Mayer.

Mayer is a stellar guitar player. I saw him open for Pete Yorn about a year ago. Had no idea who he was and never heard a lick of his music. Believe me, it didn't take long to realize this guy can play.

Also, super nice guy. Came out after the show and talked with the fans for hours. Spent 20 minutes talking about music and guitars and signed a bunch of stuff for me and my girlfriend.

His album Room for Squares doesn't really show his chops off too much (the guy just goes off live), but recommended listening are two B-Sides from his "No Such Thing" single, "Lenny" and "Wind Cries Mary". They are also inlcuded as a bonus disc in select copies of Room for Squares.

Sorry to ramble on about a non-Van Halen related guy, but he can definitely play...

What's important is that he worships rock and the Blues, writes his own sh*t, composes, plays & sings his own arrangements.

The more popular and influential a guy like that is, the more likely someone similar, yet rock-oriented will be discovered and heard from in the future.

I don't own his album, but without getting overly "philosophical", I believe he's good for the music scene, even if he does sometimes come across as a candy-a** in interviews.

No, actually. he's 25 I believe.

You can see Lenny and Message in a Bottle here.

I like John Mayer, but I saw this similar guy named Jason Mraz (I think) on Last Call a couple weeks ago who was also incredible.

That's what I thought too when I heard his Grammy acceptance speech. But he is supposedly 24.

I bought "Room for Squares" over a year ago and have loved the album. Jazzy guitar-oriented pop with lots of hooks, just check out "Neon Neon". He did worship SRV and was a copy-cat, until he decided he needed to have his own style. He's an amazing player that knows how to play stuff that serves the song first. Go buy the album.

Crap I just watched the Lenny clip. He did a real great job at playing it.

I also realized how much I miss hearing SRV.

I think you hit it dead on.John Mayer is much more of a Dave Mathews clone than a blue playing genius like SRV.There seems to be about 3 Dave Mathew clone hitting the charts within the last year or so like that guy who sings that Superman song.I thought that was Dave Mattews singing when I heard it on the radio.Mayer is what he is and that is a pop performer who's frt boy look and catchy radio friendly hooks get him noticed .I too prefer the original Dave Mathews over Mayer any day.

However you cut it, he's young and still developing his own style but he's talented as hell and plays with a lot of passion.
He knows how to make a strat really sing and that's not an easy thing to do.

Just because he plays acoustic a lot doesn't make him a Dave Matthews clone. His stuff to me is a lot more radio friendly and hooky than most of Dave's stuff. That can be good and bad. John said in an interview I saw on VH1 that he was going for maximum melody and hook on the album.

Don't dismiss him because of "Your body is a wonderland". That's the only song on the album I always skipped. Check out Neon Neon, 3 X 5, 83 and Why Georgia Why.
