I have this shitty guitar that I'm thinking of striping, but I have a question for you guys who know this stuff. My plan is to cut the pick guard from the bottom of the guitar up to the tremolo and obviously leave the part of the pickguard that has the volume/tone knobs. This guitar has three single coil pickups, so if I do this, what's the easiest way to fasten the pickups to the guitar once I get the pickguard out of there? Hopefully this question makes sense, any help would be cool, thanks guys.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you'll have to screw your p/u directly into your body, (not yours, the guitars!). What I've heard of people doing is placing a good chunck of foam underneath the p/u and having springs on your screws so you can still adjust the p/u hieght.
Ask Tribb, he's good with this stuff

first of all i'd change at least your bridge pickup with a good humbucker. (di marzio or seymour duncan - i use the jb model). It would change a lot your sound.
About fasten pickups: yes you'd have to screw your pickups to the body. It's easy to do and it will affect your tone too!!
Pickups will be directly in contact with your guitar body and take all those good vibrations you loose when your p/u are in contact with your guitar through plastic pickguard!

Glenn, high density foam is a good idea like homeunit says. Cut a piece so it fills the cavity under the pickup, and the pickup is as close to the strings as possible without touching when you drop the whammy.
Don't worry about having the pickup resting directly on the wood. That's a quirk of Ed's, but pickups are designed to pick up magnetic variations from the strings, and after lots of experimenting with pickups fastened directly to the wood, and using foam, I found no difference whatsoever in tone or sustain. A humbucker might be a good idea in the bridge position though, unless you're set on a single coil.
Again, make sure the foam is high density.

A question - what is the best/easiest way to actually strip the guitar? Tape or paint? And how do you actually paint strips on?
