Can someone tell me what sustain is?

I've heard of it, but never experienced it.

Sustain is the amount of time that a note or chord rings after you play it. The thickness and type of wood on the guitar affect the amount of sustain, so does the amp, effects, pick, strings, pickups, and just about everything else. Sustain can be increased by adding extra gain and/or compression.

Ah, so Eddie uses Harmonic Sustain in his pick-ups, like the harmonic at the end of the solo of Year To the Day live '98
