Ok, I'm getting ready to order my custom parts from Warmoth. I am wondering what kind of wood would be best for my neck.

I'm planning on going with a VIP2 body, mahogany with maple top. Rosewood fretboard and Seth Lover pickups.

Should I go with Mahogany neck or something else? Does the neck wood even matter tone-wise?

There are those who will say that the better precentage of how your tone is comes directly from the neck. There are those who will also swear by non-finished necks over painted, or "finished" necks. Rosewood vs. Maple, Etc.
I have rosewood fretboards on all my necks. Also , all my necks are finished. I've played with sanded necks & personally, it didnt make a friggen difference to me really. All I can say about choosing a neck is this; It's kinda like how you would choose a pair of jeans. Some fit better then others, & some are made of different materiels that you either like, or dont. Where am i going with this? Well, I like a certan FIT on my necks (& my jeans, for that matter) & I wouldn't really just go by recommendations on either. Fit, feel, playability, tone, thats really all up to you. My suggestion; Hit the stores & try out a bunch of different types of necks. see what each feels like, & take notice of the way they fit your hand, how the strings feel, how the action feels, how the tone sounds. There is alot less to picking a neck, what feels right, usually is right.

In terms of tone, I would have to say that a Rosewood fretboard sounds a bit warmer than a Maple one. Maple tends to sound a bit brighter. One of my guitars has a Roswood fretboard and one has a Maple. The Rosewood is unfinished, the Maple is heavily finished. I like them both but there are subtle differences to the sound of each.

If you can, go to your local music store and check out the necks for your self. It will eliminate much of the guess work. I have a Rosewood fingerboard on my neck and I also had one on my Kramer. I like the unfinished maple neck over the finished ones because I could dig in and get a better feel.

But that's just for my fingers.

I'm going with a rosewood fretboard, I'm asking about the neck itself... Does the neck wood make a difference in tone?

if you're putting a Floyd on there, you'll need a maple neck, with your choice of fingerboard. a mahogany neck won't stand up to whammy bar abuse. maple fingerboards tend to be brighter, rosewood more warm, just like the other guys say. never played a guitar with an ebony board so i can't compare that.

Sounds like with the mahogany body, maple top, and rosewood board, you'll get a fairly dark, warm sound if you're using a fixed bridge. It depends on how dense the mahogany is. I find that light weight mahogany produces warmer tone. The neck wood does make a difference in the overall sound as well.
You might want to try a maple neck with your rosewood board to brighten the sound a bit.
    Those SL's should sound great.
Some good advice from Smudge others about making sure you know what neck shape you want before ordering. What type of frets do you plan on using?

Looking at the wolfgang contour, but maybe just go with the standard size. I don't like big fat necks, fingers don't work well.

    Thinking about the 6150 frets.

Have a look at 6100's. They're about the same height, but are rounder on top, and produce a meatier kind of sound cause there's more mass to them.
