Do you have any particular pickup in mind?
Keep in mind it's a basswood body.

They're both high output pickups, especially the Steve's. Have you thought about the evolution pickup? Also, have you thought about Duncans, or are you sold on Dimarzio's?

Those are actually a real nice balanced p/u. Not too hot, my buddy has one in his guitar (tapped) and it sounds great.

Because it's a basswood body a lot of pickups will give you a muddy sound. Pickups like the Evolution will give you a pretty good sound. They're used in a no. of ibanez basswood guitars and were designed around that kind of body wood. I'm not knocking your guitar body bud. It's very well designed guitar, but things have to work together to sound good. Wolfgang pickups and EBMM EVH pickups measure very closely on an ohm meter and go into the same type of guitar, both basswood and maple top, but sound different because of their construction.
Before deciding on the pickup, think about whether you want a clean or dirty kind of distortion, and remember that you have a pretty high gain amp. If you start off with a pickup really high in mids it will distort easily, but when you kick your amp up it'll sound like mud. Go for a balanced pickup and let your amp do the work of distorting it. In other words don't go for something that's too hot. It'll sound flat and weak at low volumes and in the clean or rythm chanel, because real hot pickups aren't good for tone unless they're always pushed hard. You've also got to take into consideration the type of magnet used in the pickup. It'll have a huge effect on the sound. Two different pickups with the same output resistance will sound completely different, depending on their magnets and type of winding even though when hooked up to an ohm meter their output measures exactly the same.
Read the company tone charts before deciding, and also keep in mind that you're picking a pickup(yes I'll say it again) for a basswood body. If you pick something based on the fact that it was a good screamer or rocker in the 80's, basswood bodies were not really used much at that time and a p.u. that sounds great on a swamp ash, mahogany or alder body will sound pretty crappy on a basswood body, so to save some cash by not having to return it the day after you install it, get a pickup that was designed for a basswood type of body. If you know that a certain performer uses a certain pickup find out what guitar they're using as well as the bodywood and "amp" they're using as well. Like homeunit says, Evolutions are a good place to start. I've even tried S.D. alnico pro II humbuckers in basswood bodies with great results at high and low volumes.
Because we've talked privately you know what my favorite pickups are, so I won't beat that dead horse again. Just do a bit of research before you order and you should be fine. Good luck.

hmmmmmm all great ponits ..i cant tell you how much ive learned listening to you guys, and ive been playing for 11 yrs, so thanks for the feedback. especially you tribb our talks have changed my thoughts on tone(for the good)alot. im thinking maybe i should do this guitar as a screamer, shred guitar . i was thinking about going for a grungy, new metal sound as thats what im playing alot but now im pretty sure im going to purchase a hard tail, mahagony bodied guitar for this purpose. now back to the subject ...i do have a guy willing to sell me a steves special for 45.00...but i may still look around...ill check the pick up sites for info....

Do yourself a favor and get a treble bleed installed in your volume pot. It's a bit pricey, but worth every penny IMHO.

Nope! You've already got a treble bleed! I guess the terminology seems bass ackwards, but the bleeding part means it allows the high frequencies to 'escape' the resistance of the volume pot when you turn down. Which is what you've got!

Yup, Abe's right, you've got it. It's also referred to as a phantom tone control.
Abe, I can ramble on with the best of them.
Rick, that stevens is extremely high output, well over 16K, higher than a wolf or EVH pickup. It'll sound very dirty and will sound very flat unless your playing at full gain all the time. You might like it though. Can you ask your friend if you could try it out first, since it's used?
