Couldn't find anything in the VHE about it, so I thought someone here might know.

Does the ball on the end of the trem bar in the Poundcake video have any purpose? or is it just something Ed did for who knows why?.

Well, I've never noticed that before, but there would be no actual function of a ball on the end of a whammy bar.

Wonder WTF that is though, because I've never seen anything like that on one of Ed's guitars before.

I know that Ed likes his bars very loose with a lot of play in them. When I have mine too loose, they start twirling around when I jump around and they get in the way of my picking. I have seen that same thing happen to Ed in the past. I wonder if this is nothing more than a weight to keep it from spinning too easily?

Of course, once that thing starts spinning, look out!

Maybe itís just another Ed trick to make us all talk and look foolish again.

    Hmmmm.

I dunno, my guitar is an Axis, which may have a different trem than the EBMM guitar Ed is playing in that shot.....I only say that because I believe he's playing his Franky-striped EBMM (you only see it for a few seconds in the video).

Anyway, I bring this up, because at least on MY guitar, there is a little notch on the side of the yolk that holds the bar, which can be tightened or loosened depending on the feel you want for your wiggle stick. In other words, the "ball" shouldn't be necessary.

Actually, if you take the back off, turn a screw, remove some washers, and you can remove the bar itself completely, which is the state my EBMM is currently in.

My initial thought was that he put a weight on the bar to keep the bar from flying all over the place, yet allowing it to stay loose while performing on the spinning stage. And who knows, maybe that is the reason. But if it is, it's odd that it wasn't even used in the Runaround video.

You just never know with Ed.

You are absolutely right, M, but I understand that is not Ed's preference. Ed grew up playing with those screw on arms both on the Fender bridges and many of the Floyd bridges (Floyds did not have the arms with the collar until many years after their inception). I think it was actually an old Sammy interview that talked about this (maybe someone here remembers); where Sam said that he was shocked at the arm play Ed uses in his axes. Not only can they twirl around, but also they can wiggle up and down quite a bit before they engage with the bridge.

Well call me unimaginitive but I'm thinking it's just for looks. It's the striped EBMM that we hardly ever saw so I'm thinking it was to give the wang bar a gear shifter kinda look to it. Plus if it was effective as an add-on to the gutiar you can bet the wang bar with the ball on the end would be in Ed's trademark filing cabinet with the D-Tuna, Wolfgang stuff, stripes, etc... You'd probably also see it sold right next to the D-Tuna as the Super Duper no spin EVH wang bar!

I bet Pete Townsend wished he had something like that during all those time his right hand got a good jab from a strat wang bar while doing windmills.

I would say that's an optical illusion. It's probably something on the stage. (the ball, not the bar)

It's not though. Look for it in the video, It swings with the bar and all. It's definitely attached.
