Okay, I play on a Fender Squier II. I have a few questions and I hope you pros out there can help me out.

I heard that these play bad and a while back Eddie_italian said they have bad necks, what exactly does this mean?

I also read that they have really really bad tone, but I don't really know about that because I'm a beginner.

Also, the serial number on it is S1010910. Does this mean it was made in like 1991?

Thanks for the help, I just want to know if I got a good guitar for the money, or if I'm playing on a piece of shit.

Well not trying to offend you at all, but you got a beginner's guitar, don't expect the warmest tone and nicest neck. The Squier is a good beginner's guitar and you can beat the shit out of it and not worry about it. Don't worry about getting great tone yet, just work on your technique, you can always buy a better guitar. Just out of curiousity, how much did you pay for it?

I bought it at a pawn shop. I got the guitar, a GG-25 50 watt Gorilla amp, a strap, Martin Guitar Polish, and a guitar cable all for $200.

Then you did fine, certainly not out of the realm of a reasonable price.

Sounds like you got a decent deal on your axe.

I am still pretty new to the world of guitars, so I can kind of relate to your questions.

Brett's right. Tone and shit like that don't mean a thing.

One day you'll be playing your Squier and you're going to bend a note just like SRV does, but it's not going to sound like SRV.. Your going to do some whammy bar stuff, but it's not going to sound like EVH. Your going to be playing the chords to some AC/DC tune, but there's going to be something missing,....it's at that point you'll start to realixe the limitations of your Squier, but you're still months from that point.

Tone and stuff like that is like trying to describe a color. It's pretty tough and everybody's interpretation is a little different.

I remember a saw a dude play those big "chugs" like at the end of "Don't Tell Me...." you know how Ed puts his left hands over the strings on the neck, then just strums the strings with authority and he gets that really cool sound, "chug, chug...." I asked the guy how he got the sound, becuase I had been trying to get that sound for weeks, but all I could get was a real weak "chug".

He said, "get a new amp" It was at that point I traded in the 30 watt Peavey for my 5150 and a Wolfgang.

Keep playing and let us know how it's going

As Track 5 would say. Out...

    Thanks guys

Another question, I asked it before but never got any replies. How is that Gorilla amps? Are those good amps or are they shit? Should I trade it in for something with more "balls" or is a 50 watt Gorilla amp "balls" enough?

Chad, if 5 different players tried your amp it would sound like 5 different amps, based on the players ability.
Owning a 5150 right now would be a waste of time for you, and would probably even be a hinderance.
You wouldn't be able to control it, and it would hold you back because you might get frustrated, or wind up doing nothing but whammy dives, and squeals, which too many new guitarists get locked into, without learning how to play properly first. Also, single coil pickups sound awfull through those amps.
Jimmy's right when he tells you to learn how to play first. Your gorilla'a fine to learn basics and then some on. As you progress and experiment more, you'll be able to make the choice for yourself.

Yeah big amps sound bad if bad players use them, I think. They don' t control their sound very well, and trust me if you can't play decent, you do sound like crap through a 5150, distortion can only hide so much.

You guys are so right!!! When I first got my 5150 I thought the amp really sucked. It wasn't the amp, it was me. I couldn't control the damn thing. I was playing with the pregain on 10 and I was wondering why it was so muddy. Now I'm down to about 5 on the pre and 3.5 on the post thru a 2x12 Carvin and it sounds pretty good. I've really had to clean up my playing. With a 5150 I could hear everything!!!!! Even today, I still cringe every once in a while and wish I was playing through my old 10 watt Peavey Solid State amp that someone gave me.

I don't think the 5150 sounds that good with the pregain past 7. The other guy in my band plays with the pre at 10 and I keep telling him it sounds too muddy, but he doesn't listen. I have my rhythm at 6 and my lead at 6.5, and the posts usually around 5.5 or 6.5. (I'm in a 2-guitar band so I have to be fairly loud).

Brett you're more of a man than I am! The drummer starts giving me dirty looks if I get over 3.5 on the post. Of course, my cabinet is pointed directely at him!!!! He now wears headphones when we play. (We just play in a barn for fun, we really suck, but we are "Van Halen" in our own little world) People ask why he wears the headphones, he says, "it's a click track!" Of course anybody that's ever heard us play knows that we're not using a click track, we suck too much!!!!!!!!!
