Hey, I'm new to the board.

Anyways, during his guitar solo in "Live Without A Net", I saw him do a pick scrape, right before he went into the tapping part of "Eruption". But it wasn't a regular scrape.

He was doing a bunch of hammer-ons and pull-offs on the top of the neck, in the ranges of between the 1st and 3rd frets of the 5th, 4th, and 3rd strings. However, like I said, this was no ordinary pick scrape. It sounded as if he were doing a trill, sliding down the neck, with the notes going in a descending order. I didn't get a good look at his hand positioning because of the angle the camera was pointing.

I was wondering if anyone knew how to do this kind of pick scrape, and if anyone can possibly tell me how to do it?

    Thanks!

I'm not sure what your talking about, because I haven't watched that in years and don't have it on hand here...

But what Ed will employ alot of the times, that goes back to "Somebody Get me a Doctor"...is he will take his palm flipped with the fingers facing the headstock, and slide down that downside of his index finger while he's hammering and pulling off and quite often to an open string...It produces alot of harmonics and Eddie usually includes this innovation in his extended guitar solos, as well of some of the recorded material..

That's it exactly and it's a bitch to pull off for a rookie. It took me a while because I either pressed too hard or not hard enough. However it's a neat trick to have in your bag.

I don't believe Eddie uses this technique in I'm the One...

There are alot of fast palm muted legato/staccato passages which you might be confusing this technique with.

I'm not sure which part in particular your talkin about...

I think he may use that technique on the tail end of "Somebody Get Me a Doctor" from VH 2. Just from memory though, and I think it is heavily flanged.

P.S. He is using his finger. There is no pick involved.

Try doing very quick "pull offs" at the 2nd fret on the open A string. As your doing that,LIGHTLY run your picking hand finger up and down the string.

One clear example of this technique is done in "Sucker in a Three Piece." At the very end of the song when Sammy says, "suck it all up....etc," You hear Eddie playing this slow "harmonic trill." Except this time he is ascending instead of descending like in the Live Without a Net solo.

There are harmonics all over the guitar especially past the fretboard. Eddie was the master at bending and playin one note, but yet doing pinch/pick harmonics of different tones in that area...No one did or does it better...

I did it! Took me a couple tries. It's hard, because you guys confused me with using my index finger. So, I just looked at the tape again, and used the pinky side of my palm. Much easier!

    Thanks a lot!

This guy I met in Pasadena once told me that even when Eddie was really young (and shit-faced drunk) that he used to do that trick all of the time. I don't know what it's called cause I'm not a guitarist but the guy was in a music store and showed me the same trick you're all talking about. He said Ed would do stuff like that when he was like right out of high school. Eddie would always amaze him at how little effort it took him.
